Duggar divorce won’t come easy: Jill and Derick Dillard have ‘covenant’ marriage
The Duggars did it! Jill Duggar’s wedding to Derick Dillard aired on TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting” on Tuesday night, and it went off without a hitch. (Well, except for those melted root beer floats.) The supersize ceremony featured the couple’s first-ever kiss, but it’s their iron clad marriage certificate that really has people talking.
The couple wed in their home state of Arkansas, which is conveniently one of only three states in America that offer a covenant marriage option. A covenant marriage makes divorce much more difficult. Dillard’s mother, Cathy, told People on Monday that she signed the couple's covenant marriage certificate. "It was so special,” she said. “But it wouldn't matter if they chose that type of marriage certificate or not, those two would still have a covenant marriage.”
Covenant marriage laws require couples to obtain pre-marital counseling, and grounds for divorce are more limited. An extended separation must be in place before a couple can legally divorce, and no-fault divorces are generally prohibited.
Of course, divorce isn’t on the newlyweds’ radar, anyway. After their huge Arkansas wedding (over 1000 family members and friends attended the Springdale, Ark. ceremony in June), the Dillards are diving straight into parenthood; their first baby, a boy, is due in March. But if they ever feel that their marriage is getting a bit stale, they can always look to Jill’s parents for some advice.
Earlier this year, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar told Today the secrets to keeping the spark alive in their 30-year union, and their marital tips include communication, respect, and plenty of alone time. (Yes, even with 19 kids in the house.)
With Jill now married with child, the Duggars will give away a second daughter this weekend when 21-year-old Jessa ties the knot with fiance Ben Seewald on Nov. 1. The family's reality show, “19 Kids and Counting, ” airs Tuesdays on TLC.
