Happy New Year 2016

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. ~ Phillipians 1

Israel extremely nervous over Russian operations on its Golan border ~ Debka File

On the outside, Israel is all smiles and full of praise for way the coordination with Moscow is working for averting clashes between its air force and Russian warplanes over Syria. This goodwill was conspicuous in the compliments Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and President Vladimir Putin traded when they met on the sidelines of the Paris climate summit Monday, Nov. 30.
But the first disquieting sign appeared Tuesday, Dec. 1. Senior Russian and Israeli officers were due to meet in Tel Aviv to discuss strengthening the cooperation between the two army commands. But no word from Moscow or Jerusalem indicated whether the meeting had taken place.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that this week, the show of optimism is giving way to an uneasy sensation in the offices of the prime minister, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon and the IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gady Eisenkott. They suspect an ulterior motive behind Russia’s military movements in southern Syria, especially its air strikes against Syrian rebels, just across from Israel’s Golan border.
In particular, Moscow may be giving Hizballah and Iran an umbrella for achieving their longstanding design to displace the Syrian rebels with Revolutionary Guards and Hizballah forces and deploy them along Israel’s Golan border.
This suspicion gained ground when Tuesday, Dec. 1, the day after the Putin-Netanyahu encounter, the combined Iranian-Syrian-Hizballah units expanded their thrust from the southern Syrian town of Deraa to the Golan town of Quneitra, within sight of Israel’s defense positions.
All that day, heavy battles raged over the rebel-held line of hills running from a point just south of Quneitra to the Israeli-Syrian-Jordanian border junction. The combined force was supported by Russian air strikes and heavy tanks and artillery, seen for the first time in this war arena.
When the fighting resumed Wednesday, the IDF placed its Golan units on high alert and an extra-vigilant eye was trained on this battle.
The Iranian-Syrian-Hizballah side is gaining a distinct advantage from the deep feud dividing rebel ranks. The Islamic State and the al-Qaeda-affiliated Syrian Nusra Front forces are tearing into each other with suicide bombers and explosive cars. Tuesday, an ISIS-rigged car bomb blew up at Nusra headquarters near Quneitra (see photo).
But this also means that an Islamic State force has come dangerously close to the Israeli border.
However, even more perils are in store if Bashar Assad’s army backed by Iran, Hizballah and Russia manages to capture the hills opposite the Golan:
1. Two years of unrelenting Israeli military and intelligence efforts to keep Hizballah and Iranian forces away from its Golan border will have gone to naught.
2.  Hizballah will open the door for Iranian Revolutionary Guards officers to set up a command center right up to the Israeli border.
3.  Israel’s steadfast policy and military action to prevent advanced Iranian weapons reaching Hizballah in Lebanon via Syria will be superseded. On the Golan, Hizballah will have gained direct access to any weapons it wants directly from Syria and be able to deploy them at far shorter distances from Israeli targets than from their firing positions in Lebanon.
4.  Vladimir Putin attaches extreme importance to recovering southern Syria from the rebel forces backed by the US and Israel, because he regards the threat to the Assad regime as great from the south as it is from the north or the center.
5.  Israel faces a grave dilemma between keeping up its “honeymoon” with Moscow by giving way on its essential security interests, or taking the bull by the horns and keeping the enemy at bay, whatever the cost to the understanding reached with Putin.
Officials in Jerusalem point out that the threat advancing on the Golan peaked just hours after the Russian leader met the prime minister in Paris. Putin is conducting a hands-on policy in Syria and keeps close track of the slightest occurrence on the battlefield. He must have been perfectly aware of the state of play with regard to the Golan when he met Netanyahu, but nonetheless kept it out of their conversation.

Thank You Stephen Harper

Billboards in Calgary and Edmonton thank former Prime Minister Stephen Harper

The billboards thank Stephen Harper for "Ten Years of Excellence".
It’s not clear who paid for the ad, but PC Party leader Ric McIver says the message is well deserved.
"It never hurts to say thank you to anybody that does a good job for you and works hard and puts their life on hold for a decade and clearly Prime Minister Harper did that and there's many Canadians, I'm one of them that is grateful for that and this is, I guess, an unofficial sincere gesture saying thank you," he said.
McIver tweeted a picture of a similar sign on display at MP Jason Kenney’s Christmas open house two weeks ago.
The former Prime Minister has been keeping a low profile since the October election, though an Edmonton Oilers fan took pictures of himself with Harper in Las Vegas last month.

Franklin Graham Rebukes Obama ~ Jessilyn Justice

                     Franklin Graham

2015 was a big year in the church—and in the world. This week we're looking at some of the biggest stories of the year, selected based on feedback from our readers.

After U.S. President Barack Obama's controversial remarks comparing radical Islam to the Christian crusades, Franklin Graham took to social media to call out America's leader:
"Today at the National Prayer Breakfast, the President implied that what ISIS is doing is equivalent to what happened over 1,000 years ago during the Crusades and the Inquisition. Mr. President, many people in history have used the name of Jesus Christ to accomplish evil things for their own desires. But Jesus taught peace, love and forgiveness. He came to give His life for the sins of mankind, not to take life. Muhammad, on the contrary, was a warrior and killed many innocent people. True followers of Christ emulate Christ—true followers of Muhammed emulate Muhammed."

Don't Let One Bad Church Experience Kill Your Desire for Jesus ~ K.Degraw

Don't let one bad church experience keep you from finding a place to worship.
Don't let one bad church experience keep you from finding a place to worship.

The church could be compared to a restaurant where we can have a bad experience or meal, but does that mean we don't ever eat out or go to church again?
We can all have excuses for not attending church, but meanwhile there are people who aren't being impacted by what we offer.
Churches, like people, aren't perfect, because they are made up of imperfect people; but do we quit and give up on the church altogether?
Issues and people in the church do hurt us. They may treat you unfairly at times, and you may suffer injustices. The church is run by imperfect people, just like you and me. It is run much like the businesses, restaurants, stores and workplaces you frequent. Why should the church hurt any less when run by the same people? Because people expect us to be different and do it better.
Yes, some of us do it better, but only after being refined and defined by the hand of the living God for years. Some people aren't willing to go through the brokenness and purging it requires to truly have us act like the church. Therefore, we are going to be hurt.
But do you stay out of a store, restaurant, workplace, business, etc. because you get hurt and upset? Sure you may say you are never going to that restaurant or store again, but it doesn't mean you won't go to one of a similar kind. If you have one bad Italian meal, you may not frequent that restaurant again, but you don't stop eating Italian all together.
It is the same with church. Perhaps you've had a bad experience with one, two, or three, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't try four, five, or six. If I stopped going to all the churches and pastors and people that hurt me, betrayed me, offended me, upset me, then I wouldn't be doing what I am now. I wouldn't be traveling the U.S. hosting love tours, prophesying, preaching and hosting conferences. Many lives wouldn't be getting changed.
You are a world changer! You can make a difference in the sphere of influence God is calling you to impact. If you give up on the church, you are not impacting and changing people.
As I minister across the U.S., I have heard all the excuses in the world why not to go to church.
  • There aren't any good churches in my town.
  • The nearest church I like is 1 ½ hours away.
  • Sunday is my only day to sleep in.
  • I have been hurt in the church.
  • All the pastors are jealous of my anointing.
  • They talk about me.
  • My spouse doesn't go.
  • I haven't had time to find a church since I moved.
  • Churches only want your money.
  • They never allow me to operate in my gifts.
  • My children are a handful and I don't want them in the nursery.
  • I don't like the music.
  • I watch church on TV.
The list goes on. Your list may go on and on, but it does not give you a right to stay out of church permanently. Being in a body of believers is biblical. Not going to church doesn't give you the support of a friend to talk to when you need counsel, a church to support you with meals and prayer during health issues or the loss of a loved one.
We need to be in a church to give us a foundation of a walk in which we can build from. The church will give us a foundation and hopefully a good church will plant a desire in us to want to do more at home. It ultimately is our responsibility to grow in our walk with Christ. If we are not growing in our walk, we are spiritually dying. Won't you lay aside your excuses, your hurts and the mentality of I don't feel like it and give church and people a chance?
Complacency has struck the body of believers. The thoughts of someday I will do it. I really need to. Next week I will go to church or open my Bible and then next week comes and it doesn't happen. Everything is a choice and when we make that choice, we will impact our lives and the lives of others.
Being in a relationship with God is about loving and serving Him and people. We need to remove complacency and laziness from our lives so we can be effective and useful for the kingdom. When we get to heaven, we will give an account of our relationship and time for God. Will you be satisfied with the accountability you will be required to give?
I don't know anyone who hasn't been hurt by the church. I do know if we never try again, all of our churches would be empty. I also know there is an alarming rate of Christians who aren't reading their Bibles at home.
We need the church to ignite us. When we hear a sermon, sometimes we go home and study what the pastor preached and it causes us to open our Bibles. We need the accountability of the church and yes even some don't hold us as accountable as we would like.
But we need to take a step. We need to give church a chance. We need to be taught and instructed. If we gave up every time someone in life hurt us, we would be very lonely people. Jesus taught us forgiveness and a good place to start is in the church and for the church. So can you, get up and forgive, allow the past hurts and excuses to be put aside and give church a chance?
Our 19-year-old daughter recently left for college. She has been through church hurts with us that have impacted her greatly. However, after adjusting to her new surroundings, she chose to try a couple of churches, by herself, alone, in a new town, not knowing anyone. This was out of character for her, but she did it and I know if she gave church a chance again with no excuses at 19, so can you!
Churches aren't perfect. People aren't perfect and churches are filled with imperfect people, but Christ came to heal, set free and deliver those very imperfect people.

Twas the Night Before Jesus Came

"Twas  the night before Jesus came all though the house
Not a creature was praying , not one in the house.
Their Bibles were lain on the shelf without care .
In hopes that Jesus would not come there
The children were dressing  to crawl into bed.
Not once ever kneeling or bowing a head.
And mom in her rocker  with baby on her lap
Was watching the Late Show while I took a nap

When out in the East there arose such a clatter
I sprang to my feet to see what  was the matter
Away  to the window I flew like a flash
Tore open the Shutters and threw up the sash!

When what to my wondering eyes should appear
But angels proclaming that Jesus is here
With a light like the sun sending forth bright light
I knew  in a moment this must be THE DAY !!

The light off His face made me cover my head
It was Jesus !! Returning just like He had said
And though I possessed worldly wisdom and wealth
I cried when I saw Him in spite of myself

In the Book of  Life  which He held in His hand'
Was written the name of every saved  man
 He spoke not a word  as He searched  for my name;
When He said "It's not here", my head hung in shame.

The  people whose names had been written  with love
He gathered  to  take to His Father above
With those  who were ready  He rose without a sound
While all the rest were left standing around .

  I fell to my knees ,  but it was too late ;
I had waited too long and thus sealed  my fate .
   I stood and cried  as they rose out of sight ;
Oh , if only I had ben ready  tonight.

  In the words of this poem the meaning is clear;
The coming of Jesus is drawing near
There's only one life and when comes the last call
We'll find that the Bible was true after all !!

"I will Bless those you Bless you" ~ God's Covenant with Israel

2“I will make you into a great nation,
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.a
3I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”b   ~ Genesis 12

The Lord’s Covenant With Abram
1After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:
Do not be afraid, Abram.
I am your shield,a
your very great reward.b ”
2But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inheritc my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.”
4Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” 5He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspringd be.”
6Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
~ Genesis 15

What in the World is Happening? ~ Greg Laurie

What in the World is Happening? (#WorldWarIII?)

There is no question in my mind that we are living in the last days.
All around us are signs of the times that Christ’s coming is near, even at the door. As we read the Book of Revelation, we see a violent, murderous world in the end. Jesus said it would be like Noah’s time, which was marked by murder.

We were all horrified by the attack in Paris, killing 130 people. Now it has come to our doorstep in America. San Bernardino is now the site of the largest terrorist attack since 9/11.
Terrorists Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik killed 14, and left another 21 wounded. San Bernardino law enforcement responded quickly and killed these two wicked people. Tashfeen Malik pledged her loyalty to ISIS on Facebook and ISIS takes credit. It appears that Tashfeen radicalized Syed.
We have never faced a terrorist group like ISIS before. Sebastian Gorka is an expert on ISIS. He works very closely with US Army special commands and the intelligence community. He proposes that ISIS is far more dangerous than Al Qaeda.

Among his findings-
ISIS is the richest group of its type in human history, with enough cash to level about 1,600 terrorist acts equivalent to 9/11.
He describes their ability to recruit as mind-boggling.
They have recruited 19,000 foreign fighters in in the last nine months.
They do this largely through social media.

A CNN report says, “ISIS has the most sophisticated propaganda machine of any terrorist organization, a global communications strategy that has stumped counterterrorism officials while making significant inroads among US sympathizers.”
Another article states, “The digital age has helped terrorists do a better job of not only recruiting members but also inspiring sympathizers to carry out attacks on their own, thinking globally but acting locally.” In other words, they radicalize people online that have no digital footprint. Thus, they are not necessarily being monitored by authorities. They do not have to be authorized by ISIS or anyone else. They get radicalized and they act. There are special links to training videos that show people how to create acts of terrorism. They use encrypted technologies that hinder the ability of authorities to intercept and analyze information. This was not even possible until the last 10 years.
It is my opinion that these are all “signs of the times.”

ISIS is also aggressively pursuing chemical weapons. They have set up a branch dedicated to research and experiments with the help of scientists from Iraq, Syria, and elsewhere. Australian intelligence has just warned that ISIS has enough material to build weapons of mass destruction and have seized enough radioactive material to build a large “dirty bomb.” ISIS’ butchers have gone after Christians in particular, torturing and crucifying them. There have been seemingly countless beheadings that they film.
What is the objective of ISIS? They want to produce a global caliphate.

Radical Islam has its own version of the end times. They even have their own messiah that they call the Mahdi. More than half of Muslims believe they will see the return of the Mahdi. As my friend, Joel Rosenberg has written, “The way to serve Mahdi is to annihilate Judeo-Christian civilization and, in so doing, establish God’s kingdom on earth, known as the caliphate.”

This is accomplished through jihad, establishing “sharia law.” Sharia law is the rule by the Koran, which is the bible of Islam. This comes about by either conquest or infiltration and is referred to as “Islamification” in the West. The ultimate goal is a global caliphate.

To make things more complex, Islamists are not just at war with the western world, they are at war with themselves. Two main branches of Islam exist today: Sunni and Shia. Sunnis comprise about 90% of Muslims; Shia make up the remaining population. ISIS is Sunni. Iran has a majority of Shia Muslims. If ISIS is dangerous, Iran is even more dangerous!
Iran is taking a longer view to accomplish their objectives. Through their development of nuclear weapons, they want to bring chaos. That’s because they believe their messiah will come only when the world is engulfed in chaos and carnage. They openly vow to annihilate the United States and Israel. Iran is intent on obtaining nuclear weapons, and it appears she will succeed.

Iran just carried out a new medium range ballistic missile test in breach of two United Nations Security Council resolutions, according to a senior U.S.official.
Olli Heinonen, a 27-year veteran of the International Atomic Energy Agency said that Iran could have up to five times more advanced centrifuges than previously admitted. This is why Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has said that to defeat ISIS and not disarm Iran is to “win the battle and lose the war.”

Iran makes no secret of their desire to destroy Israel. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei recently tweeted, “Israel must be annihilated.” One of Iran’s leaders says, “The destruction of Israel is the idea of the Islamic revolution in Iran and is one of the pillars of the Iranian Islamic regime. We cannot claim that we have no intention of going to war with Israel!” Major General Ayatollah Salehi, commander-in-chief of the Iranian army, said, “The army of Iran can by itself destroy Israel.”

God is in control.
You might be thinking, “Thanks for the encouragement, Greg. Now I’m even more frightened!” But let me now give you a biblical perspective: God is in control.

The Daily News does not agree. They put out a cover story titled, “God Isn’t Fixing This.” Actually, He has and He will. No politician will fix it, nor will some new law. God will ultimately fix it when Christ returns to establish His kingdom.

The message of the angels in Luke 2:14 seems so relevant today. “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.” Yet, we look at this war-torn world, and wonder, “Where is the goodwill?” We look at horrific acts of terrorism and wonder, “Where is the peace?”

A clearer translation of the verse explains, “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.” The issue is that so many do not live lives that please God. Sin has permeated our world. And the only lasting hope is Jesus Christ. One day there will be peace on earth. But that day is not here yet. Our job in the meantime is to introduce people to the Prince of Peace. Know this: everything is going according to plan—God’s plan.

Israel is the key.
This is what is amazing: this was all foretold by the Hebrew prophets. The prophet Ezekiel was told to stand over a valley of dry bones. Then God asked him a question: “Son of man, can these bones live?” Then the bones came together and flesh returned to the bodies and they came alive.
Ezekiel 37:11–12: “Then He said to me, ‘Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They indeed say, “Our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off!”’ Therefore prophesy and say to them, “Thus says the Lord God: ‘Behold, O My people, I will open your graves and cause you to come up from your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.’”’”

That is a very specific prophecy. God was saying that Israel would be scattered and regathered. When this happened, it would be a super-sign of the end times. After the death of 6 million in the Holocaust, many Jewish people lost hope. Yet despite the worst tragedy ever, they realized they must return to their homeland. Against all odds, they started (or restarted) the nation Israel on May 14, 1948. The dry bones were alive and the prophetic was clock ticking.
In the 1950s, Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion stated, “Ezekiel 37 has been fulfilled, and the nation

Israel is hearing the footsteps of the Messiah.” On Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27, 2010, in Auschwitz, Poland, Benjamin Netanyahu made this amazing statement: “We have returned to our homeland . . . from every corner of the earth . . . The Jewish people rose from ashes . . . Dry bones became covered with flesh, a spirit filled them, and they lived and stood on their own feet.”

This regathering of Israel was predicted in Ezekiel 37:21–22, among other places. He “will take the sons of Israel from among the nations where they have gone.”
He “will gather them from every side and bring them into their own land.”
He “will make them one nation in the land.”

1. God promised that in the last days, He would gather the Jewish people from all over the world, from the different nations where they had been scattered. Has that happened? Yes, it has.

2. God promised the Jewish people that He would gather them to a specific place. Has that happened yet? Again, yes! The land of Israel.

3. God promised the Jewish people that not only would He gather them to Israel, but He would make them into a nation once they arrived in the land.

4. God promised the Jewish people He would give them back the city of Jerusalem

Check, check, check, check.

So, this whole conflict we see today in the Middle East is just as the Bible predicted. It’s really amazing when you think about it, this fascination with Jerusalem and Israel. This tiny little sliver of land, which at one point is only nine miles wide, is not accidental. The entire country is only about the size of New Jersey, with a population of 8 million. The nation Israel is 154th among the nations in land (you could fit 32 Israels in the state of Texas). Yet you cannot read a newspaper, watch TV, or look at a news website without some reference on almost a daily basis of what’s going on in this tiny piece of real estate. Why is this?

The answer to this question is really quite simple: Israel is at the eye of the hurricane of the great events of the end times. She occupies center stage in God’s drama of the ages. She, and the other players are “behind the prophetic curtain” hitting their marks. Soon, the curtain will be drawn and the final chain of events will transpire.

Yes, it was all predicted long ago by the Hebrew prophets. And all who have sought to destroy Israel have paid a price, as they are God’s people. God has promised a blessing on those that bless Israel, and a curse on those that don’t. Throughout history, the judgment of God has fallen heavily on Israel’s oppressors: Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Rome, and in more modern times, Spain, Germany, and perhaps very soon, possibly Russia and Iran.

One of the reasons God has blessed the USA is because of our support of Israel. But the Bible tells us that in the last days, Israel’s supporters will be largely gone. And Jerusalem will be the hotspot of the globe. Ironically, the name Jerusalem means “city of peace.” Yet more battles have been fought at her gates than any other city on earth.

It’s Jerusalem,stupid!
Remember years ago when the saying was “It’s the economy, stupid!” In current international politics we could say, “It’s Jerusalem, stupid!” Yet, from her very beginning, she has been attacked again and again. Israel has been the target of Islamic extremists since her birth as a nation. Now, more than 65 years later, she is still under attack.

Israel sits today on much of the biblical Promised Land despite facing continual threats from Islamic extremists on nearly every border. Clearly, this is to happen after the regathering of the Jewish people to their homeland. So, this is in our future, perhaps our near future. It also mentions a number of times this is in the latter or last days.

The Bible says the final conflict of man will be centered on Jerusalem and the Middle East—not Washington DC, Moscow, Beijing, or London, but Jerusalem. That is why the Bible student will always pay attention to a mention of Jerusalem. As Luke 21:20 says, “When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that the time of its destruction has arrived. This has all been predicted in Scripture.

Zechariah 12:2–3 says, “I will make Jerusalem and Judah like an intoxicating drink to all the nearby nations that send their armies to besiege Jerusalem. On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone, a burden for the world.” One of Iran’s leaders said, “We must spare no effort in liberating holy Jerusalem and cutting off the hands of the infidels from this holy site.”

So, we see the regathered nation Israel, hostility toward her, as Scripture predicted. Now, here’s where it gets interesting. After Ezekiel 37 is Ezekiel 38. It speaks of a large nation to the north of Israel, along with a number of allies, invading Israel. They are identified as Gog from the land of Magog.
Any map would show that Russia is north of Israel. What is even more remarkable is that Gog’s allies are Persia, Libya, and Gomer (which may be modern-day Turkey). Russia has dramatically increased her military presence in the Middle East. Persia is modern Iran.

It was not that long ago that there was very little connection between Iran and Russia, but that has all changed recently. We now have a nightmare scenario: a military powerhouse with a massive nuclear arsenal aligning itself with Islamic terrorists who are hostile to America and Israel.

This Russian-Iranian alliance is propping up the regime of Syrian dictator Assad. There are now 2,000 Iranian and Iranian-backed fighters in Syria. This is backed by Russian air power. Such an alliance has never existed, yet it was predicted in Scripture 3,000 years ago.

Listen to these headlines from one week ago. They sound as though they were ripped from the pages of the Bible!

Russian ground troops arrive in Syria in unprecedented military action.
First Iranian fighter jets over Syria alongside Russian bombers.
Iran guard simulates capture of Temple Mount from Israeli control.

Question: what would happen if Israel struck Iran’s nuclear reactors? Would Russia be forced to protect her ally? Will this or something like this be the “hook in the jaw” that pulls Russia in?

I am not saying this scenario will lead to the Ezekiel 38 showdown. But I would be a fool to not say it could lead to it.

Just the other day, the phrase “World War III” was trending on Twitter. It seems every time we turn around, there is some new catastrophe, act or terrorism, senseless act of violence, or even provocation of war. These events and others are clear “signs of the times” that Jesus is coming back.

Tomorrow,I will post part 2 of my message,”What in the world is happening?”  (see video below).

PAOC Coastal Missions ~ Rev. Jacob Fehr

Ed's Note:  When my Uncle Jake (Rev. Jacob Fehr) came back to Canada after World War 2, he had difficulty expressing what he saw, or even discussing the war because of the multiple atrocities he experienced during that time.  Tears would come into his eyes and he would only be silent about it.

Before he pastored churches in many places (Manitou, MB, Dauphin MB (I think), Watford ON, Southampton ON and a few more that I can't remember), he was the guy God used to access "far-flung" people in isolated northern areas with the gospel.  He passed away some 20 years ago, and I had nothing but respect for Uncle Jake, one of many PAOC pastors connected with my family.  Like my own pastoring dad, Uncle Jake cared little for fame or fortune, all he cared for was to see souls brought into God's kingdom.  I remember him as a devoted father, skilled carpenter, shepherding pastor and always expressed such a gentle spirit. He was one of the Captains of the "Gospel Messenger" boat. The PAOC have reserved space in their archives for him, and I am posting this in memory of his work and to familiarize people with our PAOC roots.

Growing up in Southern Ontario, as I got to know Uncle Jake, I had nothing but the deepest respect for him.  During his mid-life, I watched him raise his family.  He and my Aunt Grace took lots of time to build strong character into their lives and the lives of all around them.  He built into mine as well when he had lots of time for one-on-one over many family dinners and times together.  During our "wedding-day post-ceremony receiving line", we asked each attendee to give us some marital advice.  When Uncle Jake came by, his advice on handling "marital-conflict" has stuck with me through the years.

When I was in my mid-twenties, they took to time to find me and visit me as a bachelor in my Vancouver days.  I remember after showing up and visiting at my apartment, they asked if I would drive them to the nearby christian bookstore in Richmond.  When we got there, I realized that the purpose of the trip was to purchase a "Living Bible" for me, which then was a fairly new version. And it wasn't cheap; they were expensive!  Thirty some years later as I look across my living room, there sits the same book, now with well-worn pages from at times frequent to continual use.  We sometimes use it in our own family devotions.  Uncle Jake knew just where to invest his time, energy and money.

...From the PAOC archieves
In the early 1930's, a great challenge faced the emerging church in British Columbia. With over 12,000 kilometers of the Pacific coastline as the parish, it became a challenge of how to take the Gospel to the many isolated families and Native peoples living along the coastline. There were no roads to reach these souls; there was only one way – water! How was the PAOC to solve this challenge?
It was decided at the BC District Conference in 1939 that churches be asked to meet this great need through special designated finances. Through the help of the local churches who saw the vision of reaching souls and the International Office in Toronto, a 32-food fish packer vessel was purchased. Alternations were made with the addition of living quarters and by 1940, the first "Gospel Light" was launched.
A second vessel was later purchased, with a third vessel called "Speed The Light" added to the fleet. A 17-foot boat was purchased for Alert Bay and renamed the "Glad Tidings". At Pander Harbour, another 17-foot boat was used by Walter Ackroyd and his wife in 1943. Eventually there were 5 Gospel Boats, including the "Gospel Light II" acquired in 1973 after a devastating fire destroyed the first boat. This was not an easy ministry, yet it continued along the BC coast into the late 1970's.
Accounts of the many adventures of these pioneers have been carefully preserved in the pages of the early issues of the Pentecostal Testimony. Here is one of those reports by Rev. P Jones, BC District Superintendent. Heroism was the operative word for these men and women who guided these boats through difficult waters:
  • "The island waters along the BC coast are treacherous. Many a boat has floundered on these stormy seas. The Gospel Boat navigators have fought many a battle against riptides, sloppy seas, high winds and blanket fogs. They have been mercilessly thrown around by mighty, rolling seas, trying to make port. Their boats were comparatively small, their equipment was not of the best, and their living quarters were cramped. Yet while there was one lost soul to be rescued, the men and women who manned the Gospel Boats would pull out to sea."
These pioneers in the Gospel Boat Ministry were Frank and Mabel Harford, the first "Skipper" of the Gospel Light I and John Elwood and Mary Shannon. They brought the Gospel to the many isolated fishing folk, lighthouse keeper, loggers, native and coastal peoples on a regular basis. At Alert Bay, John and Elizabeth Nygaard ministered in the surrounding areas establishing many congregations along the way. Some of the other "Skippers" were Robert and Evelyn Starrett, Ingemar and Audrie Tingstad, Herbert and Gladys Deardon and Marjory and Bryon Personeus. Rev. Fehr was also involved with the Gospel Ship ministry in those early years. As a result of the heroic efforts of these men and women, churches were established at Gibson's Landing, Powell River, Alert Bay, Port Hardy, Coal Harbour, Quatsino, Fort Rupert, Bella Coola and Bella Bella.
The sighting of the Gospel Boat on the horizon caused great rejoicing from the inhabitants of the regions being visited at the time. Now the spiritual lives of their families and their communities could be refined and renewed because of the faithfulness of the "skippers" of the Gospel boats. In these early years, British Columbia could easily have been named an "Access Restricted Nation"!!! Maybe not as we understand it today, but the dangers and the restrictions placed upon these brave men and women then is no different from today. And like today, the call to evangelize was strong and could not be ignored.
