Abbas Calls for Palestinian State Based on 1947 Borders

by Ilse Posselt
news_23sep16_2_zero0000a-res-181ii_wikipediaUN Partition Plan – Resolution 181 (1947)
Friday, 23 September 2016 | The offer came in 1947 with the United Nations (UN) Partition Plan. The Promised Land, the resolution recommended, should be divided to create independent Jewish and Arab states existing next to one another on the strip of land wedged between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River.
The Jews accepted the offer and rejoiced at the prospect of creating a homeland on a tiny patch of the original land pledged as an inheritance to Abraham’s descendants thousands of years ago. The Arabs scoffed at the proposal, opting instead to wage a war aimed at driving the Jews into the sea—and starting a pattern that would repeat for the next few decades.
Yesterday, nearly 70 years after the Arab world and the Palestinians shunned the offer, Palestinian Authority (PA) President, Mahmoud Abbas, took to the podium at the UN General Assembly to demand a return to the borders proposed in the 1947 Partition Plan.
Dressed in a smart gray business suit and lavender tie, Abbas told his audience, “Israel, since 1948, has persisted in its contempt for international legitimacy by violating UNGA Resolution 181 (II): The partition resolution, which called for the establishment of two states on the historic land of Palestine according to a partition plan…”
“Israeli forces,” Abbas raged, “seized more land than those allotted to them.”
Continuing his emotive narrative, Abbas alleged, “Regrettably, however, the Security Council is not upholding its responsibilities to hold Israel accountable for its seizure of the territory allotted to the Palestinian state according to the partition resolution. I appeal to you read this resolution once again.”
The PA President then proceeded to take the United Kingdom to task for issuing the Balfour Declaration in 1917, a document that expressed Britain’s support for the rebirth of a Jewish state and that was instrumental in the establishment of the State of Israel nineteen years later.
“We ask Great Britain, as we approach 100 years since this infamous declaration, to draw the necessary lessons and to bear its historic, legal, political, material and moral responsibility for the consequences of this declaration, including an apology to the Palestinian people for the catastrophes, misery and injustice this declaration created.”
Choosing to ignore the War of Independence and acts of violence like the Hebron Massacre in 1929, Abbas alleged that the declaration resulted in “the perpetration of the most heinous crimes against a peaceful people in their own land that never attacked anyone or partook in a war against anyone.”
The brunt of Abbas’s tongue-lashing was, however, reserved for Israel. The Jewish state, he claimed, shoulders full responsibility for the stalled peace process and the failure to establish a two-state solution. Accusing Israel of “colonization activities,” “aggression against our cities, villages and refugee camps,” “policies of collective punishment,” “extrajudicial executions,” and “aggression and provocations against the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque,” he argued that such actions were “not those of a state that sought peace.”
The PA President also threatened to present a Security Council resolution against Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria. “We hope no one will cast a veto.” The United States vetoed such a resolution in 2011, the Jerusalem Postreports.
After wishing his audience, “Peace be upon you,” Abbas stepped from the podium, making way for the next speaker: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Israeli PM did not mince any words answering Abbas’s accusations. “Had the Palestinians said yes to a Jewish state in 1947,” he countered, “there would have been no war, no refugees, and no conflict.”
Addressing Abbas directly, Netanyahu said, “You have a choice to make. You can continue to stoke hatred, as you did today, or you can confront hatred and work with me today.”

Prayer Focus
Proclaim the Lord’s covenant to give Israel the Land as an inheritance forever. Thank Him for His eternal plan and wisdom for Israel’s leaders. Bring PM Netanyahu before the Lord, who stands firm on God’s promises and for his excellence in dealing with the peace process.

In 1855, Mr. Edward Kimball, a Sunday School teacher was used by God to lead Dwight L. Moody, a Boston shoe clerk, to give his life to Christ.  D.L. Moody went on to become an evangelist.  During one of his ministry trips, Evangelist Moody met F.B. Meyer, a pastor in England.  Moody invited him to preach in America in 1891. While preaching on an american campus, F.B. Meyer touched the heart of J.Wilbur Chapman, who made a life-changing commitment to Christ.  J. Wilbur Chapman employed a former baseball player, Billy Sunday to do evangelistic work with him.

One week, Billy Sunday held a revival in Charlotte, North Carolina.  A group of local businessmen were so enthusiastic afterward that they planned another crusade bringing in Mordecai Ham for another crusade.  During one of these services, a young man named Billy Graham accepted Jesus Christ as his saviour!

Now for the rest of the story!  To date, Billy Graham has preached the gospel to over 210 million people in more than 185 countries and territories, including many heads of state.

While George H. Bush was Vice President of the USA, and well before his son George W. Bush became Governor of Texas or USA President, Billy Graham spent a weekend with the Bush Family.

"That weekend my faith took on new meaning", the young Bush explained.  "It was the beginning of a new walk where I would recommit my heart to Jesus Christ.  The beginning of a change in my life!"

That weekend, with the future US President's was approximately 130 years after Mr. Kimball had led D.L. Moody to Christ.

Mr. Kimball's step of faith began a series of events that caused many to hear the gospel, including influential US Presidents. So you can see how on Sunday School teacher affected countless lives.  Never underestimate you purpose and gifting in God's Kingdom!

In a Culture Where Gender is Losing its Meaning, We Have an Announcement ~ by Kinsey Thurlow (jonandkinsey.com)

I was pacing back and forth in a prayer room in Kansas City one Friday morning in June when I heard that it had happened.

Marriage between a man and a woman had been reduced to preference—no longer a Biblical, moral, human statute. What had been from millennium to millennium, and established from the beginning of human history by our Maker, had been blacked out in a day by the opinions of men.
And the public unraveling of identities began taking the spotlight as never before.Am-I-a-woman-or-a-man identity. Who-did-God-make-me-to-be identity.
Precious people, made in God’s image, don’t know who they are, don’t know how valuable they are, don’t know how made-on-purpose and chosen they are.
News reports began boasting, others began retaliating, and headlines read that no matter what gender the sign on the bathroom door denoted, one could enter whichever he or she felt like.
My husband and I are soon to bring a new little life into this world. And we are starkly aware of the culture our sweet babe is being born into—one that’s declaring that gender is of no matter, that choice of gender is not God’s choice but the choice of our own sentiment.
But counter to the devastating lie that our world is circulating, we are thrilled to share this news:
Our baby is a GIRL.
And with pinks and bows and dresses we are celebrating who God has fashioned.
He, with unalterable certainty, has given us a daughter.
And our joy is running over…
She will never have to carry the superfluous burden of wondering what gender she is. Her Maker, in His perfect wisdom, decided that for her. He knew her before the earth’s foundations, and knows her now as He miraculously knits her together in the depths.
She’s a female, through and through.
Even now, at just twenty-one weeks in the womb, all of the eggs that can one day make her a mama are already stored up in her tiny frame.
In January we are due to hold our baby in our arms, and God is preparing my body to take care of her, as He formulates each mother’s milk to be gender-specific. He’s giving me “girl milk” so my daughter will get all the nutrients needed, just for her.
On the day Jon and I learned her gender, we wept elated, rejoicing tears together… followed by a shopping trip, where her daddy picked out her first dress.
In the days ahead, we will rejoice over her in all her girly-ness. I’ll fix her hair with curls and braids and give her her first tube of lipstick.
Maybe she’ll be like her mama, and be one of those girls who doesn’t mind being covered in mud from head to toe. Or maybe she’ll be a prim and proper one. Or maybe a little of both.
I’ll teach her how to master the mascara wand just right so she doesn’t smudge, how to dance princess-like, how to cook a good meal (because the old saying is still pretty true–the way to a man’s heart really is kinda through his stomach).
And I just bet we can convince Daddy to paint her toenails (because after all, he has painted Mommy’s a time or two).
And one day, Daddy is going to walk his baby girl, dressed up all fancy, down an aisle to give her away to a worthy man (if there is a such a one…)As the years progress, we are going to call her forth in her identity, in her destiny, as a strong woman of God.
We’ll pray for her every day we have breath, asking God to show Himself to her, to give her a heart that loves righteousness and purity and wisdom, to make her heart His own.
And we will pray that she, chosen before the world was made, would fulfill all of God’s purpose for her in this generation into which she is being born.
Praise God for baby girls.

The Syrian cease-fire agreement that US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced Friday night, September 9, in Geneva hands Syrian affairs over to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and the country’s military.

The accord marked a sharp reversal for Washington. In his meeting with Putin in China last week, US President Barack Obama did not agree to those steps for the simple reason that such an agreement would be in line with the policy and stance of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, not those of the Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Trump suggested several months ago that the US should let Putin finish the war in Syria, asserting that the Russian leader would be able to do it better.  Under the current situation it is no wonder that Kerry and Lavrov agreed not to release the details of the agreement. Publication of the details would reveal that the rebels in the Aleppo area, and perhaps in all of Syria, have been abandoned.  The Syrian rebels now find themselves trapped by both the Russian-Turkish agreement and the Russian-US agreement, with a noose seemingly closing around them.

Meanwhile, on Friday, DEBKAfile released the following report:
The fledgling “initiatives” reverberating this week in Washington, Moscow, Ankara, Jerusalem and the G20 summit were nothing but distractions from the quiet deals struck by two lead players, Russia and Turkey to seize control of the region’s affairs. Recep Tayyip Erdogan knew nothing would come of his offer on the G20 sidelines to US President Barack Obama to team up for a joint operation to evict ISIS from Raqqa. And, although Moscow was keen on hosting the first handshake in almost a decade between Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and the Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen), neither were known to be ready for the last step toward a meeting.  But the game-changing events to watch out for took place in Hangzhou without fanfare – namely, the Obama-Putin talks and the far more fruitful encounter between Putin and Erdogan.

According to DEBKAfile’s intelligence and Mid East sources, Putin virtually shut the door on further cooperation with the United States in Syria. He highhandedly informed Obama that he now holds all the high cards for controlling the Syrian conflict, whereas Washington was just about out of the game.
Putin picked up the last cards, our sources disclose, in a secret deal with Erdogan for Russian-Turkish collaboration in charting the next steps in the Middle East.  The G20 therefore, instead of promoting new US-Russian understanding, gave the impetus to a new Russian-Turkish partnership.

Erdogan raked in instant winnings: Before he left China, he had pocketed Putin’s nod to grab a nice, 4,000-sq.km slice of northern Syria, as a “security zone” under the control of the Turkish army and air force, with Russian non-interference guaranteed.

This Turkish zone would include the Syrian towns of Jarablus, Manjib, Azaz and Al-Bab.
Ankara would reciprocate by withdrawing its support from the pro-US and pro-Saudi rebel groups fighting the Assad army and its allies in the area north of Aleppo.
Turkey’s concession gave Putin a selling-point to buy the Syrian ruler assent to Erdogan’s project. Ankara’s selling-point to the West was that the planned security zone would provide a safe haven for Syrian refugees and draw off some of the outflow perturbing Europe.

It now turns out that, just as the Americans sold the Syrian Kurds down the river to Turkey (when Vice President Joe Biden last month ordered them to withdraw from their lands to the eastern bank of the Euphrates River or lose US support), so too are the Turks now dropping the Syrian rebels they supported in the mud by re-branding them as “terrorists.”

The head of this NATO nation has moreover gone behind America’s back for a deal with the Russian ruler on how to proceed with the next steps of the Syrian conflict.
Therefore, when US Secretary of State John Kerry met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Geneva Thursday and Friday, Sept. 8-9, for their sixth and seventh abortive sit-downs on the Syrian issue, there was not much left for them to discuss, aside from continuing to coordinate their air traffic over Syria and the eastern Mediterranean.

Washington and Moscow are alike fearful of an accidental collision in the sky in the current inflammable state of relations between the two powers.  As a gesture of warning, a Russian SU-25 fighter jet Tuesday, Sept 6, intercepted a US Navy P8 plane flying on an international route over the Black Sea. When the Russian jet came as close as 12 feet, the US pilots sent out emergency signals - in vain, because the Russian plane’s transponder was switched off. The American plane ended up changing course.

Amid these anomalies, Moscow pressed ahead with preparations to set up a meeting between the Israeli and Palestinian leaders, as the Russian Foreign Ministry announced Thursday.

Putin is keen to succeed where the Obama administration failed. John Kerry abandoned his last effort at peacemaking as a flop two years ago.  But it is hard to see Netanyahu or Abu Mazen rushing to play along with the Russian leader’s plan to demean the US president in the last months of his tenure - especially when no one can tell who will win the November 8 presidential election – Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump – or what policies either will pursue.

All the region’s actors will no doubt be watching closely to see how Turkey’s “Russian track” plays out and how long the inveterate opportunists can hang together.

Ms. Ruth Pinkston (Blair) ~ Mr. Braeside's Daughter (Rev. JH. Blair)

Sunday, September 4, 2016 ~ At the final 2016 service of this summer's series of Braeside public services,  Speaker Doug Snyder publicly recognizes and honors Ruth Pinkston (Blair) for her father's contribution.  Rev. JH Blair (Mr. Braeside) was the founder of Braeside camp.  He was a very interesting man to say the least (and incidently there is a book written about him by Evangelist Jack West).

Ruth spoke as a "living stone" and a young girl (beginning at five years old) growing up in the early days of Braeside Camp as JH Blair's daughter.  She witnessed people's humilty, zealousness for holiness and hunger for God and his Word ~ ...very different days than today's "christian" scene.

"There where tents and little roughly-made cottages everywhere on the grounds as people flocked to see what God was going to do."

"...Revival would break out in the line-up to our cafeteria, as hundreds of hungry people seeking after God would begin to pray for each other while they waited in the food lineup!" , she stated quite matter-of-factly to us of her memories of Braeside days gone by.

"They didn't mind waiting at all!"

CAMP MEETING SEASON There are four main camps in our Western Ontario District (WOD) fellowship and each one of them is a great source of Spirit-life blessing. We have an outstanding list of speakers and worship leaders.

Why Camp Meeting? There are many reasons why camp meetings have been a great source of Spirit-life in our history of the fellowship.

1. It draws people away for a concentrated period of time to seek the Lord and experience the things of the Spirit.

2. It allows people to experience an expression of the body of Christ unique to that camp meeting and complimentary to their experience in their own church expression.

3. People are able to form life-long relationships with individuals in the body of Christ that they would not otherwise meet in the confines of their own congregation.

4. The relaxed atmosphere and concentrated opportunity for fellowship brings refreshment and renewal to the body, mind and soul.

5. Camp meeting is a time free from the normal routines of local church programming and an opportunity to focus on the fresh edge of the things of the Spirit.

6. It blesses the local church because those attending return inspired, renewed and invigorated with the fresh passion for the Lord and the mission of the church.

"It was the right hook that got him. Pastor Waite might have stood in front of the communion table trading punches with head deacon Ray Bryson all morning, had not Ray's fist caught the pastor on the chin 2 minutes and 15 seconds into the fight.

Pastor Waite went down for the count at the altar where most members of Emmanuel Baptist Church had first declared their commitment to Christ.

Donald Waite’s navy blue, three-piece worsted was almost impossible to wrinkle, but two of his front teeth were so loose that he would have trouble with corn on the cob for the next three summers.  Ray Bryson’s hand was broken in two places.  Some of the townspeople dubbed him Sugar Ray after that Sunday, but never to his face.

Nothing in the history of this rather typical New England community on the outskirts of Boston could have prepared them for the Sunday morning donnybrook.  After all, the days of the Boston Tea Party were far behind them.

Many at Emmanuel Baptist traced their ancestry back to a Christian group known simply as “those who follow the Holy Way”. Protective of their own and unyielding on questions of either their pilgrim ancestry of the inerrancy of Scripture, those in the Holy Way had built the town of Newton from a farming village into a thriving suburb by the end of the Second World War.  Guarding the Christian faith from the forces of compromise and worldliness was their generational watchword.

But none of the town’s founders could have anticipated the massive ethnic and religious reshaping of Newton in the second half of the twentieth century.  The Jewish population grew dramatically, and the Baptist population began to shrink.  Emmanuel tried to stem the tide with a bus ministry.  Eventually four bright blue buses toured the area each Sunday displaying the church slogan, “God Is with US at Emmanuel Baptist Church.”

Attendance rose for a few years.  But gradually more and more banquet space in town was reserved for bar mitzvahs, and the plan to build a larger sanctuary at Emmanuel was put on hold.  Temple Beth Shalom even began beating Emmanuel regularly in the church softball league.

No one anticipated the retirement of Pastor George Linheart either.  He had pastored Emmanuel Baptist for twenty-five years, guiding the faithful through change and challenge, preaching with conviction on temperance, television and the Trinity.

The pulpit committee searched the Northeast for five months before deciding to call Donald Waite as their new pastor.  Waite was a fourth-generation New Englander, with ancestors who had been Baptists before the Great Awakening.  He was fresh out of a Navy chaplaincy and wore his dress whites to the interview.  His spit-shined shoes were reflective black pools, and each button on his coat glimmered like real gold.  Donald’s wife, Flora, owned an impressive collection of hats, some displaying large ornamental flowers.  She spoke only when spoken to and carried a purse large enough to bail water.  In a town that thrived on the salty air of Boston harbor, the Navy uniform inspired confidence and the hats were a source of fascination and some amusement.

The Waites settled into the parsonage just before Christmas, and the new pastor started his pulpit ministry with a series of sermons on “Submitting to Pastoral Care and Leadership”.  He also began a visitation program, calling on the church members in their homes.  Appreciating his eagerness to get acquainted, the members hospitably scheduled their pastor for a luncheon, a dinner, or an afternoon tea.

Every host or hostess asked the same question: “Pastor, is there anything you need?”  And each time Pastor Waite make the same request. “Since I’m new to the flock,” he would say, leaning back in his chair, “anything that you could tell me about the people in the church would be of enormous help.  I just don’t know enough about everyone.”

The people of Emmanuel Baptist did not disappoint him.  Within a few months, Donald Waite was privy to most of Newton’s well-kept secrets.  Mrs. Campbell’s drinking problem, Frank Fowler’s secret divorce, the Clemen’s family battle with mental illness, and Brian Maguire’s time in prison were among the offerings.

Many church members praised Waite’s ability to listen.  He was so patient.  So understanding.  Some even arranged additional meetings to relate stories they had forgotten to share at first.  Waite carried an appointment book and made notes, capturing each rich detail.  By early March he had bought a larger appointment book and was starting to exert unusual control over the congregation.

When Frank Fowler demanded an agenda change during a church business meeting, Pastor Waite suggested a ten-minute break.

“You’re being pretty tough on the rest of us, Frank,” Waite said as the two men stepped outside and strolled around the parking lot.  “I would think that a man who has made mistakes-especially marital ones-would be more compassionate.”

Ordinarily Frank, who had one bad eye from a Vacation Bible School accident, would have squinted in the harsh lights of the parking lot, but he was looking at his shoes.

“I think I can keep the secrets I know about you, Frank,” Waite went on,  “especially when it comes to church business”  Frank may have been looking at the ground, but he saw the pastor’s meaning clearly.

Waite’s talent for getting his own way was a large as his appointment book.  One of his pastoral conferences could reduce the most disagreeable church member to sulking silence.  And by April most of the folks at Emmanuel had decided they couldn’t trust any of their friends from the church.

Late that month when the deacons and their wives gathered for their annual potluck supper, Ray Bryson voiced what many of them were thinking.  “If things continue this way, I don’t think Donald Waite should be our pastor.”

Frank Fowler squinted his agreement, Brian Maguire nodded nervously, and the deacons decided to call a meeting of the whole church to discuss the issue.  The bylaws required such a meeting before a pastor could be dismissed.

Before dinner was over, however, Pastor Waite had received a call from one of the wives, detailing the entire conversation.  His sermons on pastoral leadership had paid off.

Very quickly the church divided into two hostile camps.  Those who felt the pastor should be removed began sitting on the left side of the church.  On the right sat members who wanted to give him more time.  The choir was split and given to vacillation, the organist sided with the pastor, and the church secretary didn’t want to get involved.

Flora Waite resigned from her position as assistant director of the Dorcas Society after one of the ladies commented that blackmail was far worse than gossip.  Offertory envelopes contained more than tithes.  Routinely they were dropped in the collection plate imprinted with particular dogma.  “Waite No Longer” read some.  Others declared, “Support the Pastor.”  And there was always one proclaiming,  “The organ is too loud.”

The deacons began to sit as a group on the left side of the church, pressing together in the front pew.  In the past, one of the deacons had always made the morning announcements.  But ever since the weekend of the potluck, Pastor Waite had read the announcements himself, each time omitting the board’s call to special assembly.  For four weeks he simply kept the meeting from being announced.

On the third Sunday in May he was apparently going to do the same thing.  Connecting the lapel mike to his suit, Waite solemnly stepped down in the front of the wooden Communion table with its ornately carved command: “This Do in Remembrance of Me.”

“If anyone is visiting today,“ he began, “please raise your hand and our ushers will come by and give you some information about Emmanuel Baptist Church.”

At that point, Frank Fowler got up from the front pew and strode up the stairs of the platform to the pulpit.  Bending toward the microphone, he smoothed out a piece of paper and started to read: “This is to announce a special congregational assembly for this afternoon to discuss Pastor Donald Wa-“

Suddenly he could not be heard.  Flora Waite, at the piano, had begun pounding out “Have Thine Own Way” and was immediately joined by Sharon Carlson at the organ, drowning out the rest of Frank’s message.  Pastor Waite began singing loudly into his lapel microphone, and some on the right joined him.

Before they could begin the second verse, Frank pulled the organ power cord from the wall, and Brian Macguire shut the piano lid.  Flora Waite beat on his arms for a minute and even lost her hat in the scuffle, but Brian held on.

There was an awkward pause.  Deacons still in their seats coughed nervously and crossed their legs.  Most of the choir was leaning forward, and one of the tenors was taking notes.

Then Ray Bryson got up and walked over to the pastor in the slow deliberate way that one approaches an injured animal.  The veins in Ray’s neck were showing as the two men hissed under their breath at each other.

After a minute, Ray appeared satisfied.  He turned to go to his seat, but his feet were tangled in the microphone cord and he fell down.  There was an audible gasp from the congregation.  Pastor Waite delayed for one brief moment before reaching to help him up.  It was long enough to convince those close to the front that their pastor had indeed pushed Ray Bryson.

Ray must have thought so too, because he bounced to his feet and hit the pastor square in the nose with his fist.  The lapel mike registered the impact.

Flora Waite screamed and ran to help her husband, but she never got close to him.  Within an instant a majority of the congregation converged on the Communion table, punching or shoving.  Many came down the center aisle to help break up the combatants, but remained to fight after their side began to fall behind in the skirmish.  The melee soon spilled over to an open space beside the organ.

Two tenors and a baritone jumped over the wooden railing of the choir loft and began exchanging punches with members from both sides of the aisle.  Mary Dahl, the director of the Dorcas Society, threw a hymnal at one of the tenors, but the missile sailed high and wide and splashed down in the baptistery behind the choir.  Sharon Carlson had given up on the organ and moved to the piano, where she tried to restore order by playing “Blest Be the Tie That Binds.”  Anne Fowler, Frank’s wife, told her to return to her seat.

When Ray Bryson’s right hook finally took the pastor down, someone grabbed the spring flower arrangement from the altar and threw it high in the air in Ray’s direction.  Water sprinkled everyone in the first two rows on the right side, and a visiting Presbyterian experienced complete immersion when the vase shattered against the wall next to his seat.

The fight ended when the police arrived on the scene.  They restored order, took down names for the report they would file, and recommended that some of the men seek medical attention.  Ray Bryson’s hand was broken, and Mary Dahl’s knitting needles were confiscated.

The following Wednesday each of the deacons received a notice to appear at the Newton Courthouse for a hearing.

Pastor Donald Waite had also been summoned. On the day of the hearing, both he and Flora appeared at the courthouse.  They sat on one side of the aisle in the hearing room, and the deacons drifted toward the other.

When the court officer entered, breaking the uncomfortable silence, Brian Maguire recognized him immediately as David Goldstein, one of the spares on Temple Beth Shalom’s softball team.  For several minutes Goldstein looked over the police description in front of him.  The one time he looked up, he seemed to focus on the tape on Waite’s nose and the cast on Ray’s hand.

“I know some of you from the softball league,” he finally said, removing his glasses to rub the bridge of his nose.  “We may have had our differences on the ball diamond, but the cause of religion in our city is at stake here.  There must be some way you can settle your dispute among yourselves.”  No one could look at him.

“I have been a pastor in the service for many years,” said Donald Waite, standing up.  “And I have never met a more stubborn-necked people than those in this church.”  At that , the deacons raised their heads, and Frank squinted in the light.  But Waite was just warming to his theme. “Now I have been in the Way for a long tim-“

“In the way of what?” asked Goldstein, and then decided not to wait for an answer.  “I’m dismissing this case,” he said, rapping his gavel with sudden force on the desk.

Waite sat down awkwardly as Goldstein continued.  “No charges will be pressed at this point, but I urge you to work this out within your own church.  Your Jesus Christ may allow this sort of thing in His followers, but the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will not permit fistfights as a regular order of church service.”

The leadership of Emmanuel Baptist filed quietly out to their cars and drove off in different directions.  On the back of each car was a bumper sticker declaring, “God Is with US at Emmanuel Baptist Church.”
