Do NOT Skip any of these Steps!!!
Step #1 - Start with a $ 1,000. starter EMERGENCY FUND!
- Get this amount saved RIGHT NOW! This is often the hardest step because you need to tell yourself that you are serious. You MUST save money !!!
Step #2 - PAY OFF ALL DEBT USING THE "DEBT SNOWBALL" (except your home mortgage debt)!
- HOW? -List all your debts from smallest to largest and make minimum payments on all but the smallest debt. THEN ATTACK THE SMALLEST DEBT "WITH A VENGEANCE!"
- When that smallest debt is gone, attack and squeeze the next smallest debt also WITH A VENGEANCE!
- REMEMBER...this is behaviour modification...not at all about math.
- Light Bulb Moment: ....This is why you attack the smallest debt first, (not the debt with the highest interest rate). The idea is to see some results for the pain you are experiencing. This is crucial because your belief-system begins to kick in and you realize that this is do-able! Your faith kicks in! ...your HOPE grows and you become more intense about this.
- RUN FROM DEBT LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT !!

Step #3 - Take your little $ 1000. Emergency Fund & Build it up to a 3 to 6 month EMERGENCY FUND.
- This should be something quite liquid ...like a money fund which bears minimum interest.
- This causes your wife to be comfortable with the security you now have. God has "wired" women with a great need for security, and frankly...a women is smarter in this department than men are. This is a fact! She will relax and look at you through a different set of eyes when there is an EMERGENCY FUND in place.
- This EMERGENCY fund is an INVESTMENT in your marriage!
- An Emergency Fund turns a crisis into an inconvenience! (The transmission may go on the car and you'll find this is just an inconvenience.)
Step #4 - Invest 15% of income towards retirement! Your money starts to make you money!
- Wealth starts to build.
- $100 per month deposited at age 25 to age 65 @ 12% in a decent growth stock
- Keep in mind this $100 is what you spend on pizza or cable tv per month. ... you can do this!

2015 Braeside WOD Men's Day Report
Report on MEN's DAY 2015
- Held at Braeside Camp, Paris, Ontario on
September 12, 2015
- Norm Bishop has been running Braeside Men's Day for 15 years, and I joined 70 other men for this event. The threat of rain, (although it didn't actually materialize), caused about 70 other men to stay home. Norm has this annual event running very smoothly and it goes from 8AM until 6pm. You, get to choose from a number of activities that are running across the sprawling Braeside campgrounds. I decided on the Archery and Fly Fishing clinics, who promised to take a novice and make both an archer and a fly-fisherman in short order. I chose these as I knew little about either one of them and I'm always up for a challenge. I was not disappointed!
- Meet Ken Collins from Fergus, Ontario. Ken was the Archery Instructor at the recent (September 12/2015) Western Ontario District's Men's Day. Ken runs his own Outdoor Life company called Grand River Outfitters from Fergus. He has been involved in archery for 40 years, and he's been teaching archery and fly fishing for over 25 years. You don't need to spend much time with Ken to realize he's a very natural professional outdoorsmen with a passion for God. He has been associated with Men's Day for about 15 years, and does an amazing job.
- He began the session by suiting us up for my bow according to my height and arm length. He handed me a right-handed 28" Recurve-style bow with a 35 pound drawstring. The so-called right or left-hand is based on the hand you draw the drawstring with. The bow is lightweight and great for learning on and quite powerful. It's made by an Italian company and labelled "Ragim".
- The lesson begins. "Men, the three important things in learning this sport are: Stance, Bow-grip (V.S. "gorilla-grip) and String-grip. Proper stance is with your feet a shoulder's length apart. The string is brought right to your eye-tooth."
- Ken brilliantly integrates his archery lessons with life examples that parallel the christian life, ...like some of the "targets" in life we are to pay attention to. Short stories about how important Grace is, for example. During the time I spent with Ken, I learned he got caught up in the Jehovah Witness cult at an early age, before God got ahold of his life and saved him in an amazing way.
- "...you'll notice one of the feather fletches on the arrow is a different color ....that should be positioned to the outside, and is called the "cockfletch". His instruction has us all very excited about our new-found sport. He continues..."knock-squeeze occurs when your fingers contact an arrow...never touch any part of the arrow....this causes the arrow to porpoise and is highly unstable" "Watch, This is how you grip the drawstring with your leather finger protector....If I see your arrow porpoising, I'll be telling you to check your knock-squeeze"...and on it went as we all strained to get it just right.
- "I'm going to teach you the non-aim technique...." and the lesson was on. In an hour or so he had us accurately hitting targets at 25 yards. Ken made it fun and safe.
- At one point Ken picked up his own bow and nailed a 60 yard target within a half inch, ...on the first attempt. His "non-aim" technique was indeed effective. Any deer in sight wouldn't stand a chance.
- After several hours under Ken's supervision, I must say I developed a pretty good aim. With a hunting arrow, I gained the confidence that I could likely bring down a deer without doubt...but at 25 yards!

I discover Dave is also every inch a pro and is one of the most experienced fly-fishermen in Ontario. He occasionally surfaces on television fishing shows.

Call On the Name!
I'm in Edmonton this morning with it's zero degree temps and bright sunshine. I find it a beautiful fall day after my all-nighter westbound flight. With my destination set in my gps I edge my rented Focus into freeway traffic. After searching through an assortment of Country & Western singing cowboys, Rock and News-Talk, my dial lands on SHINE-fm and beautiful worship soon floods through the speakers.
Driving towards the city some twenty something miles distant, I reflect on my brother and the difficult surgery he's facing in a few weeks. Since his near-death industrial accident a few years ago, his health has continued to decline until he realizes a difficult and risky gastric-bypass surgery is inevitable or he will face a heart attack. Numerous complications abound as multiple system failures have caused a variety of health issues including breathing and circulation difficulty. His situation has brought about some wonderful spiritual changes in his life and his faith in a mighty God has never been stronger! I am proud of how brave he has been in the face of his difficulty and often find myself praying for God to undertake and bring him through. I want to drop by and spend some time with him and pray together for God's best for his life. We head out to a Red Lobster and get caught up on all the latest family news.
In my Hebrews study this week, we are learning of faith as portrayed through the Old Testament heros. God honored those heros for how they believed and how they thought about their situations in spite of incredible odds often in spite of who their opposition was. I think about the large risk Charles faces as I am driving. Then I begin to realize how big and faithful God has been to our family the past few years when facing some significant life events. Scripture speaks often of "His power and salvation". I decide to reflect on who God is and how powerful is His Spirit as I drive and listen to the music. He's Big, he's Glorious...he's concerned with everything in my life and Charles's. I resolve as the church to trust Him yet again as our family approaches this Oct 13 surgery date.
I will rouse people in my life and in my church to call on His name on Charles' behalf. A name more powerful than any disease! There are many things that the church often does poorly ... organize poorly, study poorly, fight poorly, compose newsletters poorly etc., etc.. But there is one thing the Church does well. ...when faced with some incredible odds the Church begins to call on God. It's like looking heavenward and pleading "Help"; ... or it's like one beggar telling another beggar where to find food! The church is at it's best when at Prayer. Jesus said, "...My House shall be called a HOUSE OF PRAYER!" When faced with insurmountable odds it begins to "Call on The Name". The church may frequently stumble and slumber, but when the blood-bought bride, the 'ecclesia' or 'called-out ones', ...when 'the church' is finally aroused, she is a force to be reckoned with!
Jesus Christ is the Becoming One to His church. Whatever the specifications of our need ....He Cares, He Understands, He is acquainted with our grief; He hears our cry! He begins to change situations; He gives us hope and a future. When we call on Him for healing, he IS Jehovah Rophe, ..."the God Who Heals " (for I am Jehovah that healeth thee ~ Exodus 15 ASV). That is His name; It is Who HE IS; it is what He loves to do when we trust Him for the road ahead!
It's ALL about the Groom and we are trusting for a miracle!

1Now
faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not
see. 2This is what the
ancients were commended for.
3By
faith we understand that the
universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not
made out of what was visible.
4By
faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was
commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith
Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.

faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death:
“He could not be found, because God had taken him away.”a For before he was taken, he was commended
as one who pleased God. 6And without faith it is
impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to

admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. 14People
who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15If
they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had
opportunity to return. 16Instead, they were
longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to
be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

Note on
v.16: The spirits of the OLD Testament saints could not go into heaven
until Jesus died for their sins, so they went to Sheol (Hell). Jesus taught that
Sheol was divided into two parts, with Abraham the head of the part for those
who believed in God's promises (Luke 16:19-31, Psalm 16:10, Isaiah 61:1, Matthew
27:52,53) ~ Pastor Chuck Smith's explanation. (he has prepared a city for
them.~ v.16)

faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had

4So Abram went, as
the Lord had told him;
and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from
Harran. 5He

As the
years go by, there seemed to be no heir in sight. Neither Abram nor Sarai
were getting any younger! ....yet Abram continued to wait on God
....because Abram knew God was faithful to his Word! He was very old
now as was Sarai (the mother to be). Perhaps they wondered aloud
at night as they drifted off to sleep, "....is this going to really
happen?" Abram knew it would but perhaps he began to have doubts
it seemed, because the text shows he began to include Eliezer in his estate
planning!
In Genesis 15 we see more of
Abram's faith, and God continuing to promise Abram that He would fulfill what
God had promised many years prior.

the word of the Lord came
to Abram in a vision:
“Do not be afraid, Abram.
I am your shield,a
your very great reward.b ”
2But Abram said,
“Sovereign Lord, what can
you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inheritc my
estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3And Abram said, “You
have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.”
4Then the word of
the Lord came to him:
“This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood
will be your heir.” 5He
took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed
you can count them.” Then he
said to him, “So shall your offspringd be.”
6Abram believed
the Lord, and he credited
it to him as righteousness. - Genesis 15
Abram was indeed a wealthy man.
In this agricultural society, his wealth was measured in terms of his
abundance of livestock. Abram had it all in this society. However
in this society, if one didn't have an heir (son), it meant that at death the
wealth would pass to the steward (manager) of the wealth. Nowadays,
wealth by law passes to the family, but at some point, it seemed to Abram,
that Eliezer his manager, was going to inherit all of Abram's mighty wealth.
Can you hear Abram's frustration at the thought of it all just slipping
through his fingers when he died?
““Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and
the one who will inheritc my
estate is Eliezer of Damascus? (God)...You have given me no children; so
a servant in my household will be my heir.”

Hebrews 11: "A Gallery of Faith"
Probably no subject is so glibly
misunderstood as faith. Nearly everyone professes to have some of it. Many
people would like to have more. The writer to the Hebrews takes faith out of
religious theory and clothes it with flesh and blood. The author does this
with what we today call role
models. These models inspire us to go on believing in Jesus.

Faith is confidence ... (v.1)
·
We have never seen the wind.
We see the effect of the wind, the evidence for the wind on trees,
blowing dust, blowing our hair, feeling it on our face.
·
We have never seen magnetic forces. But we only see evidence of it, we haven't actually seen
the force.
·
We have never seen God. Yet we see the evidence of God all
around us. Faith in God helps us to realize
God because of the evidence all around us.
·
God said, "Let there be light"; God said, "Let the
waters above the firmament be divided with the waters beneath the firmament";
God said, "Let the earth bring forth herb-yielding fruit after it's own kind".
·
by Faith we learn that the world was made by God's command!
·
The Hall of
Faith begins here. These are people who were known for
outstanding faith.
·
Abel (v.4) Abel's
sacrifice was offered in faith, Cain's was not. Cain
got angry that his offering was rejected!
·
Gen 4:2 ~ Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3In
the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering
to the Lord. 4And
Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his
flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his
offering, 5but
on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry,
and his face was downcast.6Then
the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry?
Why is your face downcast? 7If you do what is right, will
you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at
your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” 8Now Cain said to his brother
Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.”d While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother
Abel and killed him.

Enoch (v.5) ...he was commended as one who pleased God. Just as Enoch was spared from the judgment
of God upon the earth during the Flood, so the Church will be spared from the
tribulation.

Abraham
(v.17) Abraham is called the father of those who believe.

The birth
of Isaac was based on God's faithfulness in performing that which He had promised
- not on Sarah or Abraham's faith.
·
Sarah (v.11) was past childbearing
age (over 90) and Abraham was over 100 years old, "as good as dead,"
and yet God gave them a child and innumerable descendants.
·
In Genesis 12 we read the (famous) Abrahamic covenant (promise)
that God held with Abram (later called Abraham). God's promise to them
concerned giving them the child (later named Isaac) they always wanted to
have. Remember at this time Abram and Sarai his wife were elderly when God
gave this promise to Abram. Track with me as we observe Abram's faith,
and what it means to us in today!
1The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from
your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show
you.
2“I will make you into
a great nation,
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.a
3I will bless those
who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you.”b
Just when
it seemed to Abram that the promise wasn't going to be fulfilled in his
lifetime, he had a fresh word from the Lord......God reminded Abram again of
His earlier promise! God reminded Abram of who put the stars in place!
God reminded Him that yes indeed, a son would be born to Abram and
Sarai even in their old age. God always keeps his promises !
4Then the word of
the Lord came to him: “This man (Eliezer) will not be your heir, but a son who is
your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” 5He
took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed
you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspringd be.”
Here now, we can fast-forward to
the New Testament and then find that we can lay claim to the fruit of our
faith!
7Understand, then,
that those who have faith are children of Abraham. 8Scripture
foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles (gentiles...that would be you!)
by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to
Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”d
Here in these passages, we see we humans easily have a tendency to let doubt creep in, even though the very God of Heaven offers us His promises. This is a classic case of God's man trying to work things out his own way, even after God had given him a promise! Abram began making plans for Eliezer to take over Abram's estate, until God took him aside and reminded Abram of the promise he'd make to him earlier.
