A Night to Remember, A Night to Ponder

I well remember the bright night many years ago in 1967, as Dad drove our family the dozen or so miles in the car back home to Madsen, the small mining town we called home for many years.  Dad and mom kept busy in their Madsen pastorate, and were making good progress in their pioneering evangelization efforts. Nearby Red Lake, Ontario, was the central town in that mining district.

As we often did, we had been to nearby Red Lake for the evening and now were driving southwest, heading home in our '63 Plymouth Belvedere and beginning to realize how breathtaking the eastern evening sky appeared.  ...but this night was different.  The night seemed unusual, not just because we were miles from the nearest community or even other lights.
The summer night was brightened by the rising golden glow of the huge full moonrise that had begun to make it's way skyward.  It glanced it's reflection off of the ponds and lakes we passed. It's seeming engulfing presence pulled away each of our thoughts and attention. The car became mostly quiet as we took it all in, except for moments of "wow, isn't that beautiful", or "would you look at that".  It seemed we could almost reach out and touch that big moon!  Dad drove slowly to give him time as well to enjoy it's peculiar beauty and appeared to be thinking about something.  We pulled over briefly, rolled down the window and just gazed outside.

After a few moments of silence, Dad thoughtfully said, " ... do you know that the bible says that in the last days, the moon will turn to blood?". At first I thought he was starting to tell us a story or perhaps a joke, but when I realized he didn't have that on his mind at all, I cringed at the sound of his words.  At only ten years old, chills suddenly went up and down my spine.  "Why?", I quickly asked him, as the thought of it sounded messy and very spooky to me.   "I'm not real sure....but this is what the bible tells us will happen in the last days, before Jesus comes", was his reply.    Realizing my alarm, he then added, " ....as long as we are christians, and living the way Jesus wants us to live, we have nothing to worry about".   I let out a sigh, as if I'd just dodged a bullet.  That evening and it's scene has been burned into my mind since that day when I was just ten years old.  I remember it as if it happened last week.  I had early on in life been aware that "because of Jesus" I was entitled to so much.

Fast forward a few decades .... where so much has completely changed since the now seemingly docile sixties I grew up in!  It seems we are much closer to this impending date.  In fact every indication is that it is imminent!  The signs of the times are all around us.  The middle east is a volatile powder keg more than ever before in history.   Biblically, no prophecy needs any further fulfillment before Christ's return. Middle east nations are drunk with their determination to eliminate Israel from her God-given land and position in history. Countries that Ezekiel of old prophesied boldly of, regarding end-time alliances against Israel are coming to the forefront as if they are actors entering for a stage command performance! Society is rapidly deteriorating against God's design.  The homosexual agenda has "advanced" from a criminal act of sodomy in the '60's to full acceptance by a godless society.  Secular humanism has infiltrated our society on every level pushing prayer and God out of our classrooms and life.  Hearts are so cool toward Christ, as busyness, fleshly desires and an instantly gratifying digital age has replaced so many traditional family relationships.

We now have a better understanding of  "blood moons" and lunar eclipses, thanks to NASA and christian leaders who are well-researched and risk their reputation to share their findings.  The blood moon phenomena spoken about biblically, is again set to appear three more times in the next 18 months, according to NASA scientists, then no more blood moons for the next 100 years.  The next total eclipse and subsequent Blood Moon will appear on October 8, 2014,  followed by the same event appearing on April 4, 2015 and September 28, 2015.  While we do not know the exact significance of these blood moons, we know they are spoken about in the bible and appear to be connected with "the last days".
While we are instructed to "occupy til I come", we also need to live more purposefully, as time appears to be short.  It is indeed an exciting time to be a christian as we see God has promised to use the heavens to signal to us "Get Ready, Watch & Pray!  ...I am coming soon!"

When Jesus comes for me, I want to be studying His Word,  and living for Him ....like He's coming for ME!  I want to be doing my part in fulfilling His Great Commission.

Looking Back a Few Years ~ J. Hayford

Editor's note:  I was recently looking back at an article that Pastor Jack Hayford wrote shortly after Obama was elected to his 2nd term.  Here it is reprinted.

Jack Hayford: Election Outcome Could Be Prophetic Announcement

My feelings, following the results of the 2012 presidential race, are not predicated on the relative merits or either candidate. They are borne with facts that are true of Americans' lives at this time in the 21st century; some of which are flavored by choices by our seated president's words and actions, but not without difficulties that may be attributed to either of our presidential candidates or their parties. In short, our vulnerabilities and weaknesses as a nation—economically, spiritually, morally or otherwise, have a deeper root than the failures of human management or policy.

It is in the light of that preamble that I make this statement: The re-election of President Obama is yet another landmark of history that reveals the inevitable flow of events which increase in depth and spread when the church mistakes its mission. As one incident, the election outcome holds the portent of being a prophetic announcement of the impending end of the significance of the church in America, unless ...

... Unless a reawakening of Christ's body in America occurs, which heeds the "first of all" priority Paul, by the Holy Spirit (1 Tim. 2:1-2), assigned to the church's ministry of prayer and intercession for leaders, peoples and nations, no administration or political party will be capable of a solution to our nation's essential problems.
... Unless the church becomes more persuaded that the fountainhead of its strength is in living worship—by which we humble ourselves, seeking God's presence (more than it demonstrates our skill at making music)—no degree of programming or growth will be able to regain the place of influence the once-effective voice the church historically has had in the U.S. as "salt," to neutralize the toxic issues existing in the arena of morality, justice and family life.
... Unless the pulpits, sanctuaries and classrooms of the church be once again employed as centerpieces of shaping disciples unto transformation with solid teaching and meaty preaching, holding forth the Word of life, the declining percentage of believers in America will be further reduced. "Church Growth" alone will never be an effective substitute for "people growth"; the formation and equipping of committed followers of Jesus Christ, who bear His Cross and who shine as lights in the world.
... Unless a vanguard of today's American church leadership chooses to take a stand with Israel as the Sovereign God's chosen people (a theological posture rooted in the Word and our nation's history), the effect of out present apathy will advance an already increasing global anti-Semitism, and the brash rise in political scorn manifest today will continue to move our nation closer to the edge of self-destruction by reason of its collective choice to pass judgment against and forsake our support of God's ancient land and people; a choice certain to boomerang cataclysmic judgments upon us via a scenario which may well bring about the finale of our nation's existence (see Zech. 12-14).

In summary: the bitter fruit of the 2012 presidential outcome is not the party or person who is taking the White House, but in the disappearing fruitage of the church's inherent, God-given dynamic to affect the spiritual climate of our nation and effect a harvest of the "fruit of righteousness" in a country formerly seen as sufficiently "Christian" to leave a deep enough stamp on the national life to indicate a credible, spiritual presence.

Jack Hayford is founder and chancellor of The King’s University in Los Angeles and a former president of The Foursquare Church. Best known as “Pastor Jack,” he is the founder of The Church On The Way in Van Nuys, Calif., and a prolific writer and musical composer.

WHY CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER STEPHEN HARPER IS ABSOLUTELY, UNAPOLOGETICALLY PRO-ISRAEL

WHY CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER STEPHEN HARPER IS ABSOLUTELY, UNAPOLOGETICALLY PRO-ISRAEL

Raphael Poch : Aug 15, 2014 : Breaking Israel News

Harper and BibiUnder Harper's leadership Canada has become one of the world's "most fervent" allies of Israel.
(Canada)—A recent political exposé by Mark Kennedy appearing in the Ottawa Citizen answers some of the questions that many political aficionados have been asking for some time: "Why is Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper such a strong supporter of Israel?"(Photo: Facebook)
The question is not new and is not specific to Operation Protective Edge. However it is one which people have been asking since Harper first espoused his opinion regarding the Middle East conflict.
The support he has shown for Israel has been absolute and unwavering for the entirety of Harper's career, so much so that it has spread to many others within the political and social hierarchy of Canada.
Kennedy stated Harper was "remarkably prescient" during speeches made early in his career both in 2003 and 2010, revealing that "he would one day turn Canadian foreign policy on its head and, perhaps most notably, make this country [Canada] the world's most fervent ally of Israel."
Harper took office shortly before the Second Lebanon War in 2006, and eve at that early point in his term took a very strong pro-Israel, pro-democracy stance. His support and that of Canada has been voiced over and over again, and most fervently during Harper's trip to Israel this past January.

Harper and wifeFor his support, Harper became the only foreign dignitary to have received the Key to the Knesset and who was termed as a true friend of Israel by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. (Photo: Official Website of Stephen Harper)
Kennedy accurately explained that Harper stressed that conservatives understood "the notion that moral rules form a chain of right and duty, and that politics is a moral affair," unlike the "modern left"—which had adopted a position of "moral neutrality".
In a speech delivered at the Civitas group meeting in 2003, Harper stated, "We understand that the great geopolitical battles against modern tyrants and threats are battles over values. Conservatives must take the moral stand, with our allies, in favor of the fundamental values of our society, including democracy, free enterprise and individual freedom."
Harper continues to support Israel in the current conflict and has even gone so far as to accuse Hamas of being responsible for all the bloodshed. Supporters praise him for his "clarity," while critics castigate him for a simplistic approach to a complex issue.
Kennedy claims that what motivates Harper is the simplicity of right and wrong, of good and evil, and that while the motivation is simple, the question is still very complex.
"It's about the complexity of the need to take the right side—Israeli democracy versus Islamist terror—in a geopolitical conflict that could someday have impact on Canada," writes Kennedy. "Harper made it clear. He was going to emphatically choose a side."
Canada for the past eight-and-a-half years has stood by the only real beacon of democracy in the Middle East and has made a clear choice to do so, often coming to odds with the United Nations and numerous Arab countries who choose to vilify Israel at every opportunity.

5 Things Wives Wish Their Husbands Knew

Romantic couple
Are there things your wife wishes you knew about her? (iStock photo)
I recently wrote a post called 5 Things Husbands Wish Wives Knew. Today I want to cover the wives' perspective—what wives wish their husbands knew.
In writing this post, I had to get some wise counsel from my wife, Susan, and several other ladies on our Family First team to ensure that I was representing the ladies well. Here are five things wives wish their husbands knew:
1. Wives desire appreciation. Sometimes it seems that wives are the hardest-working people on the planet. But do we tell them? I addressed this in my blog, 10 Things Wives Want to Hear from Their Husbands. It is our privilege to be the beneficiaries of much of their work, and it is our job to thank them for all the things they do—whether it's making dinner, cleaning the house, or working hard outside the home to help support our family. Expressing your appreciation will encourage and motivate her in a big way. Bottom line: Don't ever take her for granted. Be her biggest fan!
2. Wives desire attention. When you get home from a long day at work, don't always go straight for the TV or your phone. Ask your wife about her day working and then tell her what your day was like. Listen with empathy, and don't make light of what she's saying. The first 10 minutes when you walk in the door set the tone for the evening. By giving her your full attention, it shows that you truly respect and care for her.
3. Wives desire affection. All women crave affection, no matter how long they've been married. They want to hold your hand, to be told they're beautiful, and to be kissed tenderly. My wife has flat-out asked me to be gentle. My bear hug only works occasionally. She wants tender affection. Because ultimately, physical affection reinforces that you're still in love with her even after years of marriage together.
4. Wives desire patience. After getting input from some of the married ladies in the office in writing this blog, I found out that I am not the only husband who struggles with being impatient. Over the years, I've been learning How to Practice Patience and will continue to work on this virtue for the rest of my life. Men, I encourage you to talk calmly and patiently through issues with our wife. If you don't, you will be in constant conflict; or worse, she may even shut down. When a disagreement escalates, you may want to agree to reconvene later after you both cool off. If your lack of patience is turning into anger, you may want to read 3 Ways to Get to the Root of Anger.
5. Wives desire friendship. Your wife desires a companion—someone to turn to when frustrating circumstances arise at work or when the kids are out of control. It's important to be a man who will listen to her share her difficulties and then comfort and help see her through the trials. By the way, friendship goes both ways. Your wife also wants you to trust her with your thoughts, feelings and challenges in life.
Ladies, is there anything I have left off the list? Feel free to share any other things wives wish their husbands knew in a comment below.

The No. 1 Thing You Must Do to Grow Spiritually

Man reading Bible
If you're not getting the Word into your life, then it's doubtful that you'll grow spiritually. (Lightstock )
Some years ago, I struggled mightily with the idea and execution of what is commonly referred to as my "personal devotions" or "quiet time." It seemed boring, lifeless and frustrating.
It was hard to focus, and I almost dreaded opening up my Bible to read a chapter or two or three. I was in what I thought was a spiritual rut. However, I made a decision to stick with it as long as I could, even though the task of plowing through a dense, ancient religious text wasn't particularly enjoyable.
Then, one day, something happened. My entire frame of mind shifted. I simply woke up and desired to read my Bible. It wasn't just old and hard to read and challenging anymore. It was life giving! I no longer dreaded my "personal time" with the Bible. I craved it. This opened up a whole new season of spiritual growth for me and taught me what I think is one of the most important spiritual lessons I have learned: the value of personal discipline.
I didn't do anything special for my breakthrough in spiritual growth. I just kept showing up and doing the hard work of trying to listen to God through the Bible.
Personal discipline is simply doing what is good for yourself, even when you don't feel like it. We all know that discipline is key to growth in more areas of life. Want to get fit? You've got to exercise, even when you're feeling sluggish. Looking to be more healthy? You know you have to skip the doughnuts sometimes even though it seems like they're calling your name. Trying to move ahead financially? You have to be disciplined in your spending habits to reap the rewards later.
Spiritual discipline has fallen out of fashion, probably because the idea seems to run counter to the whole "it's a relationship, not a religion" mantra that is so quotable and oh-so-appealing to those who would like their spirituality to be "organic," "authentic," and to "flow from the heart." I'm not saying these things aren't valuable and good; it's just that they're sometimes used to put a fresh coat of paint on what might be termed "spiritual laziness."
The truth is that relationships require work and discipline. You've got to put forth the effort and put forth the effort consistently for any relationship to grow and flourish. If you're married or have observed marriages, you know what I mean. It's not all just "organic." You have to become a student of your spouse. You need to plan regular times to be together. You act toward your wife in love, even when you don't feel like it ... and the relationship grows.
It's the same way with God. I'm not saying that if you feel like you're in a rut you have to keep doing the exact same thing you're doing now. Change your devotional time the same way you add variety to your workouts. Just don't give up.
The number one thing you have to do to grow spiritually? Show up every day. Be disciplined and grow.

FAQ about Understanding Spiritual Gifts - (A study from IBLP)

"Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant."              (1 Corinthians 12:1)

"Spiritual gifts are an expression of the "manifold grace of God"  (1 Peter 4:10).  Just as there are many gifts, there are many ways to organize them for study and application.  The following study has brought joy and freedom to thousands of Christians who have wondered what their spiritual gifts are and how they could effectively use them.

GOD'S GIFTS MAKE US MIGHTY IN SPIRIT!   (from IBLP)
1.     What are Spiritual Gifts?    Drives, opportunities, and results given by the Holy Spirit to achieve God's supernatural goals - 1 Corinthians 12 - 14.
Each person who is born again into God's kingdom takes on a "debt of love".  It is designed to
motivate us to fulfil the law of God.  Thus, we are instructed in Romans 13:8, "Owe no man
anything, but to love one another; for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law."   God gives
spiritual gifts so that we are able to pay our debt of love.
2.     Who is given a Spiritual Gift?   Every Christian.  It is activated at salvation when the Holy Spirit unites with our spirit - Romans 8:16-17
When we are born physically, we possess certain natural abilities.  When we are born again
spiritually, God takes these natural abilities and turns them into the means by which He can
work through us supernaturally.   Christ "...gave gifts unto men...For the perfecting of the
saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ; Till we all come in the
unity of the faith..." (Ephesians 4:8,      12-13)
3.     How many gifts does each Christian have?
There are three types of gifts: Motivation, Ministry and Manifestation - 1 Corinthians 12:4-7.  We
have one motivational gift and the possibility of many ministry and manifestation gifts.
             - 1  Peter 4:10, 1 Corinthians 12:31
"Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.  And there are differences of
administrations, but the same Lord.  And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same
God which worketh all in all.  But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit
             withal"  (1 Corinthians 12:4-7)
Each Christian's motivational gift is given by the Holy Spirit.  the Greek root word for gift is
charisma which comes from the word char meaning "joy"Charis is the Greek word for grace
which is God giving us the desire and power to do His will.  (Philippians 2:13).
The Greek word from which operations comes is emergeia.  Its English equivalent is energy.
As God gives power trough our motivational gift, the effects produced by it are the operations
(energema) or manifestations of the Spirit.
Each Christian may also have several ministry gifts given by the local church.  After listing the
ministry gifts in 1 Corinthians 12: 28-30, Paul concluded by saying "But covet earnestly the best
gifts..."  those that would most effectively strengthen believers and advance the kingdom of
           God.
Peter emphasizes the singularity of the motivational gift when he states,  "As every man has
received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold
grace of God"  (1 Peter 4:10)
4.     Why Do We Receive Only One Motivational Gift?   So we can concentrate on it - Romans 12:6-8.  So we can see our need for each other - Romans 12: 3-5.
The ear is designed to carry out a different function that the eye, and the hand to perform
different functions than the foot.  Gifts are distributed so that no one Christian will "...think of
himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to
every man the measure of faith.  for as we have many members in one body, and all
members have not the same office:  So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one
members one of another.  Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to
             us..." (Romans 12:3-6).
If one Christian had all seven motivational gifts, he would certainly be self-sufficient
and would not need the other members.
5.     How Do We Discover Our Motivational Gift?
·         Accept Christ for Salvation - Romans 10:9-13
·         Enter into Christ's victory over sin - Romans 6 thru 8.   It is significant that spiritual gifts are not explained in the first chapter of Romans, but in the twelfth chapter, after sin has been identified and conquered in the believer's life.
·         Concentrate on the needs of others - Ephesians 4:12-13     Only as we begin using our gifts will we confirm them and also see the need for other's gifts.
·         Discern your real motive in helping others - Romans 12:4
·         Identify what Christians do to irritate you - 1 John 3:16     Most Christians fail to understand that their spiritual gifts allow them to see needs which are overlooked by those with other gifts.  Rather than frustrating them, this should be their signal to confirm their gifts and use them to help others see what they see.
·         Understand the categories of gifts - 1 Corinthians 12:4-7
·         Distinguish the characteristics and misuses of each gift.     Most of the problems which we face come when we try to fulfil our spiritual gift in the energy of the flesh rather than by the energizing power of the Holy Spirit.  Most of those who have discovered their spiritual gift have done so by detecting misuses of their natural abilities.

6.      What Are the Rewards Of Spiritual Gifts?     Knowing we have a gift that is valuable to the Body Of Christ, we are able to achieve a deeper level of self-acceptance and purpose in life.
As we exercise our gifts, we experience personal fulfilment and a deep sense of joy.  By concentrating          on our gifts, we achieve maximum fruitfulness with minimum weariness.

Use of the skills (gifts) that God gives to Christians - Romans12:3-8
v3 God has given to me his *grace. So I say this to each one of you. Do not have too proud an opinion of yourself. But rather, think clearly. *Judge yourself by the *faith that God has given to you. v4 Each of us has one body, which has many parts. All these parts do not have the same function. v5 So we who belong to *Christ are many people. But we are like one body. We all belong to each other.
v6 By the *grace of God, God has given different skills to us. These skills are different because of the nature of God’s *grace. For example, someone might give a message from God. But that person must be careful not to use this skill in a way that is greater than his *faith. v7 And a person who has some other skill should also use his skill in the same way. So, some people serve. Other people teach. v8 And other people can encourage. The person who gives should be generous. The person who leads should be eager. And the person who shows kindness should be cheerful.

Verse 3 Paul uses the words, ‘I say to you.’ Often Jesus began an important statement with similar words (for example, John 3:3). God had shown his *grace to Paul, so that he had become an *apostle. So he speaks with authority. He tells Christians to think properly about their skills. They must not be proud. They must not think that they are better than other people. The standard by which they must *judge themselves is the standard of the *faith. That *faith means to trust in *Christ. He lived and died for them. When they think about *Christ’s action they will be humble.
Verses 4-5 Paul talks about the human body. All the different parts of a body are necessary. In the same way, all members of a Christian church should work together. Then the church can work properly. The people may have a variety of skills. But each skill is necessary for the purpose of God’s work in that church.
Verses 6-8 Christians should be humble because their skills come from God. Then Paul gives 7 examples of special skills that Christians should use. He mentions other special skills in 1 Corinthians chapter 12 and in Ephesians chapter 4.

1. *Prophecy. A Christian might receive a message from God. That Christian would give this message to the local church. But he must only give such a message if he has *faith. In other words, he must trust God that the message comes from God. Christians must not give *prophecies that do not come from God. So any *prophecy must agree with the Bible’s message.
2. To serve. The *Greek word is ‘diakonia’. It can mean various activities. The *apostles were ‘serving’ when they *preached (Acts 6:4). And the same word describes the work of the 7 *disciples who gave food to poor widows (see Acts 6:2-3). So a person should use whatever skills he has in order to serve other people.
3. To teach. After people become Christians, they need to learn about the meaning of their *faith in their daily life. Someone must teach them.
4. To encourage. This has two meanings: a) to persuade with strong words. A *preacher can do this. b) to comfort and give courage. Barnabas is an example of this meaning. He was well-known among the first Christians because of the way that he encouraged people (Acts 4:36-37; Acts 9:27).
5. To give. If we share our possessions, money or time with other people, we should do so in a generous way. We should enjoy ourselves as we give to other people.
6. To lead other people. Church leaders should carry out their responsibilities eagerly.
7. To show kindness. This can mean a) to forgive people who have offended us or b) to give help wherever anyone needs help. The good Samaritan was a man from Samaria whom Jesus spoke about. We can read this story in Luke chapter 10. This Samaritan had *mercy on a traveller who was hurting. The Samaritan delayed his own journey in order to help the man. And the Samaritan even paid so that the man could stay at a house (Luke 10:30-37).

With this chapter, Paul's strategy for Timothy starts to emerge clearly. Timothy's mission was to deal with the false teachers. Paul sees, however, that fighting false teachers with ideology alone is fruitless.

The church must be healthy so that Jesus Christ is communicated through it!  ...the Apostle Paul has other missionary plans and can't be the bishop;  Paul has delegated Timothy as the Bishop of the Church at Ephesus, and gives him much in-depth instruction so that the church stays healthy!  He writes Timothy to instruct, equip and encourage him in his task.  This week we look at an important instruction in Chapter 4:

"... Do not neglect your gift, which was given you...". 1 Timothy 4:14

Men, I want to encourage each one along in the same way.  God has designed us each in just a certain way, and He has given each of us certain giftings.  The happiest and healthiest christians I know are those who discover their giftings ...and use them!  Are you using your "kingdom" gift?
