The Sticky Valve.

I greatly enjoyed my trip to the Okanagan during this weekend's Vancouver layover. It was a great time to revisit Evangel my old church and join them and be part of a passionate time of worship.  I was able to connect with old friends and spend time with family.  Joshua was already ahead of me and so I met him there as well.

I always enjoy my trips to the orchard and since my trip there in May, much has changed in the growing cycle.  Everything growing is fully alive and at its peak.  I'm planning to someday perhaps retire there, so the dreams just kept on coming.  I ate large juicy sweet peaches right off the branches, and enjoyed large ripe bush raspberries.  Grampa packed  four trays of the juicy peaches to carry home which Andrea has canned.  Some varieties of the apple crop are now being picked, while the rest will be picked in the next few weeks.

Over the past few years I've written about my father-in-law's prowess as a master orchardist. Local experts often have come to him for advice and assistance in testing new varieties.  This time of the year he daily carefully inspects the results of all the labour that has been accomplished by his workers.  He is keen to make any changes going forward that he needs to, in order to maximize the orchard's productivity.

This very modern orchard is designed for maximum commercial production.  Each tree is pruned just so,  "... Ideally we want 50 leaves per apple to synthesize the required sugar content in each apple." he explains. His approach is very calculated and it's like being in science class once again. While each tree is about 22 inches apart from the next, they tower as much as 20 feet high and produce tons of quality market-ready fruit.

As I was lounging in the sun on the backyard patio adjacent to one of the 47 rows of the 19,000 trees he has, I heard him call me. "...hey Mark,...come here I want to show you something".  I got up; I was curious as to what he was to show me.  Curious because ...well let's just say that class is always in session when Grampa Merk calls you into the orchard.  He held out the branch of one apple, a very large healthy apple and then with his other hand he reached over and pulled off a scrawny apple from an adjacent tree.  Holding them side by each, he looked up at me and said "See...these were both planted at the same time ".  Of course the question begged to be asked, " Why is that apple on the left so tiny?

"This tree had a sticky watering valve, it was never able to receive water from the distribution pipe in order to grow to maturity", grampa quickly replied as he tossed it on the ground with some disgust.  "Totally unmarketable!"  He turned and walked away.

Kelowna is a semi-desert climate with very little rainfall.  Each plant needs to receive water daily during the growing season. Along each of the rows the one-inch black pipe flows to deliver life-giving water to the root area.  At each tree station an individual watering valve delivers the refreshing, life-supporting, ...indeed precious water.  However, the water was not able to reach the tree.  Immediately my heart was pierced with the words of Christ in John 15.

"Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me." ~ John 15

As Christians we are to be closely abiding in Christ...feeding on his Word, receiving life-giving "water", listening to His voice, doing His will...in fact our health depends on it.  We must be positioned and willing to receive the water. We can't be brought to maturity unless we are in step with His process in our lives.

John 15 ~ The Vine and the Branches
1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunesa so that it will be even more fruitful. 3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
9“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command. 15I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17This is my command: Love each other.

Call His Name ~ G.E. Patterson

Isaiah 9
New International Version
1Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—
2The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned.
3You have enlarged the nation
and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
when dividing the plunder.
4For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,
you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor.
5Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
will be fuel for the fire.
6For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7Of the greatness of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this.

The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want ~ Psalm 23:1

Dark Headlines ~ Joel Rosenberg Blog

The darkest headlines I have read in years.

by joelcrosenberg
"The Satanic Temple is set to unveil its...monument in Detroit." (AP/CBS Detroit)
"The Satanic Temple is set to unveil its...monument in Detroit." (AP/CBS Detroit)
Earlier this week, I flew back to the U.S. from Israel for several speaking engagements.
In the coming days, I will continue to write about the crumbling U.S.-Israel alliance, the Iran nuclear alliance, the horrific advance of the Islamic State across Syria and Iraq, and what happens to America, Israel and the nations of the Middle East according to Bible prophecy.
But I need to draw your attention to some of the most troubling headlines I have seen in years. The news in the Middle East is dark and getting darker, to be sure. But the headlines here in America are getting very dark as well -- mass shootings around the nation (see here and here); Planned Parenthood executives caught discussing how best to sell hearts, lungs and brains from aborted babies; and now the unveiling of a sculpture of Satan in Detroit in what is being promoted as the largest public Satanic ceremony in American history.
No, this is not fiction. These are not plots of my future novels. This is all happening across America this month.
Consider the following:
I am absolutely sickened by these videos in which Planned Parenthood executives discuss -- so coldly, so cruelly -- the selling of human body parts over a lunch of salad and wine.
Captured on tape by the undercover video sting operation of a pro-life organization, these two executives discuss without shame or remorse how they would be happy to ask doctors who perform abortions on human babies to be extra careful to kill the babies in such a way that their livers, lungs, brains and other body parts can be extracted intact and sold. One Planned Parenthood leader says the babies can be killed in a "less crunchy" way. The other casually jokes that she'd like to make enough money from the sales of these body parts to buy "a Lamborghini."
Have you watched the videos? Please do, and please share them with others. People need to know the truth. The mainstream media is giving some coverage to the story, but not nearly enough. This is sick. This is barbaric. This is the stuff of Dr. Mengele and the Nazis, and it isn't happening on the other side of the world in Auschwitz; it is happening right in America every day.
Planned Parenthood is an organization that kills more than 300,000 babies in the womb every year. It also receives more than a half-billion dollars a year of federal money -- that's right, your taxpayer dollars and mine. Congress should immediately cut off all taxpayer funds to the group. PP should be investigated for criminal activity (it is illegal to sell body parts for profit). Congress should also immediately pass pending legislation to ban abortion after 20 weeks. And pro-life legislators and activists in Washington, D.C. and the States need to make a new push to end abortion once and for all in this nation.
Since 1973, more than 57 million babies have been aborted in this country. Their innocent blood is crying from the ground for justice, and God is listening. If we do not plead for His forgiveness and turn this thing around, judgment is coming.
These headlines alone would be horrific enough. But it gets worse. Consider this headline just published today:
Here are excerpts from this story, published by the Associated Press and CBS News in Detroit:
  • A group is planning to unveil an 8-foot-tall bronze statue featuring a goat-headed Satan in Detroit during a gathering that’s being billed as the “largest public satanic ceremony in history.”
  • The Satanic Temple has said Saturday’s private event will be open only to people with tickets, $25 each.
  • Invitations to “The Unveiling” summoned guests to prepare for “a night of chaos, noise, and debauchery… Come dance with the Devil and experience history in the making.” The event location is not being announced publicly and is known only to those with tickets.
  • The group said the bronze Baphomet monument, which weighs about one ton and has never been seen before in public, “is not only an unparalleled artistic triumph, but stands as a testament to plurality and the power of collective action.” The statue, which backed by an inverted pentagram and flanked by statues of two young children gazing up at the creature, shows Satan with horns, hooves, wings and a beard.
  • The group went on to say the unveiling event “will serve as a call-to-arms from which we’ll kick off our largest fight to date in the name of individual rights to free exercise against self-serving theocrats.”
  • Photography is strictly prohibited at the 18-and-older event unless, of course, you’re a $75 VIP ticket holder. Those partygoers will have an exclusive opportunity to be photographed seated on the Baphomet monument.....
  • The statue had been planned for the state Capitol in Oklahoma City until Oklahoma’s Supreme Court banned a monument of the Ten Commandments on Capitol grounds.
  • Detroit was ultimately selected for the unveiling because The Satanic Temple in the city has a “strong congregation,” with more than 200 registered members....
It is sobering how rapidly evil is rising in this country, how brazen, how public. We need to humble ourselves. We need to get on our knees. We need to seek Christ's forgiveness and His mercy on this country. We need to do it now, or we will face the consequences foretold in the Bible thousands of years ago.
Consider just one passage of many:
"At one moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to uproot, to pull down, or to destroy itif that nation against which I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent concerning the calamity I planned to bring on it. Or at another moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to build up or to plant it10 if it does evil in My sight by not obeying My voice, then I will think better of the good with which I had promised to bless it." (Jeremiah 18:7-10)

ALSO THIS STORY WAS PICKED UP BY JOHN HAGEE
Wake up! This is happening in America today! This is what the news is reporting: "Despite the dark pageantry, however, the Temple says its concept of Lucifer is as a literary figure. 'The mission of The Satanic Temple is to encourage benevolence and empathy among all people,' the group’s website states."
Satan is alive and well. Don't let anyone fool you into thinking he is a literary character. The Bible tells us that he comes to rob, to kill, and to destroy! He does not come to encourage empathy. WAKE UP! STAND UP! SPEAK UP! It is time that the voices of righteous men and women are heard. Let God arise and let his enemies be scattered!

Satanic Temple unveils goat-headed statue in Detroit

A crowd of several hundred gathered Saturday night to see Detroit’s newest resident: A 9-foot, 2,000-pound statue of a goat-headed occult idol named Baphomet.
The Satanic Temple unveiled the bronze figure to an estimated 700 attendees at an undisclosed location. The group’s initial venue canceled after local religious groups protested.
The group’s approach to secrecy with the second venue led to little opposition on Saturday, Director of the Detroit Satanic Temple chapter and national spokeswoman Jex Blackmore told Fox News.
“Protesters arrived for a short time at our first ticketing location, but retreated after only about 30 minutes,” Blackmore said. “One woman attempted to block the event entrance and was removed by the police in cooperation with the building's owner. “
Guests were washed in red light shining down from the rafters at the venue as “dark punk” bands played and DJs performed from a stage located beneath a lighted, upside-down crucifix. Satanic Temple officials delivered speeches and a pair of shirtless men held candles on either side of the statue, prior to its unveiling.
Despite the dark pageantry, however, the Temple says its concept of Lucifer is as a literary figure. “The mission of The Satanic Temple is to encourage benevolence and empathy among all people,” the group’s website states.
The statue will now be stored out of public view until the Temple can find it a permanent home. The group hopes to display it at the Arkansas State Capitol, next to a monument of the Ten Commandments.

Summer Memories ~ 2015

As days shorten and Summer 2015 has drawn to it's inevitable close, it leaves me with so many memories.

  • A travel trailer Quebec  (Montreal & Mt Tremblant) trip camping with our family. Trading stories around a campfire.

  • A motorcycle ride near Port Carling on Lake Joseph with my friends.  Then driving back home in the rain.
  • Racing go-carts with my kids in Coboconk, Ontario  (Where's that?).
  • Touring the Trent-Severn waterways and poking around in "Loyalist territory" including a few museums that bring to life days gone by.
  • Bancroft Live Summer Theater "You're a good man, Charlie Brown".
  • Awesome lively, Godly Braeside Camp speakers that challenged my thinking and strengthened my faith.  Speakers like: Joe Amaral, Brent Cantelon, Robert Martin, Pastor Zowa, Brooks McElhaney & Greg Hubbard followed by vibrant altar calls, seeking Spirit baptism and responding to God's Spirit. I won't be quite the same...(I think it's the journey, not just the destination?).
  • Long bike rides with Andrea around our travel-trailer camp in Paris, Ontario area;
  • ....and lots of battling Andrea in tennis.  She's good....long live our tennis rivalry!
  • Lots of Golf ....including Renting two expensive golf carts, and buying four expensive green fees so we could traverse the course in style with my 3 boys....it was worth every penny!  ...and their excitement was priceless.

  • Strolling the Halifax Pier 21 docks and waterfront on weekend layovers;
  • visiting my Kelowna inlaws fruit orchard on a Vancouver layover, catching up on "what's new";
  • visiting my "old" Kelowna church seeing old faces and lot's of new ones.
  • Biking around Stanley Park in Vancouver.
  • reading yet another John Grisham book, "the Firm", then watching the movie I missed years ago; reading a biography on the apostle Paul.
  • Burning the calories on the treadmill, yet they still keep on coming.
  • Finally exchanging my Old Faithful Blackberry for an Android...a quantum leap in technology!
  • Watching "The Law of The Harvest" in action; You truly do reap what you sow!
  • Baking in the sun at a Blue Jays game, and cheering them on with my family.
  • Enjoyed a quiet Laurentian weekend get-a-way with the love of my life....just Andrea and I celebrating 24 years of life together.
  • Watching Jeffrey excel at his first driving range attempt;
  • Watching Jeffrey's awesome footwork as he scores yet again in his soccer league.
  • Watching Jeffrey get his first job at the post office (Young's)
  • Watching Joshua get his first job at The Club at North Halton (Golf Maint.)
  • being with Joshua as he writes and easily passes his Drivers test and later being the one to show him how to parallel park and drive a car for the first time!
  • Seeing my daughter thriving in her friendships and excitingly listening to her plans for pursuing God in Bible School this fall. I long for my kid's to follow hard after God! I have prayed long and hard for their future spouses and my future grandchildren.
  • Saying goodby to Danae for almost a year as she heads to Europe.
  • Talking to Ryan about his new job in the finance sector and listening to his ideas and ambitions. Listening to Ryan's plans to attend St Andrew's University in Scotland this year.
  • Taking Ryan to the airport enroute Scotland.
  •  How exciting for me as a father to witness new growth and excitement!
  • A Bloor street cafe filled with 2000 board games and a Japanese diner where my family forced me to break out of my mold and try sushi for the first time (I hated it!).  I made them promise not to "invite me to have sushi ever again".
  • Reading an autobiography of the Apostle Paul. Indeed an unusual person and human instrument that God used mightily.
  • Phillip Kellar's an author I heard speak about sheep when we lived for 5 years in Kelowna near where he lived.  His book (a recent Value Village find I will add), "A shepherd looks at Psalm 23" I bought and find very insightful.  We are using it now in our summer family devotions and find it's a family hit!
  • Studying Hebrews & probing into the depths of my faith until I understood it just a bit better!.
  • Sharing bitter grief with friends who buried their loved ones far too early.
  • Feeling the sting of misguided people; enjoying reconnecting with long lost west coast friends.
  • Spending time with my nearly 92 year old mom again and making her laugh hard ...as only I can do because I'm her son!
  • Riding my Goldwing in the GTA 2015 Teen Challenge Freedom Ride with Andrea and helping raise $30,000. for their women's program.
  • Attending my first cousins retirement dinner?? Retiring already?
Perhaps it's just me, but I'm noticing that more and more it's the "things of the Spirit" type of memories that have any lasting impact on my life and how I live my life and the memories I make. I think it's the journey, not just the destination with Family, Friends, Laughter, waiting on the LORD and spending time in the Word lingers longest in my list of memories after the others on my list have disappeared.
